GE Medical, headquartered in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, is one of the largest manufacturers of CT medical imaging systems in the world. In 2004, they introduced the Light speed VCT, a 64 slice CT scanner. CT Technology has been around for some 30 years but exploring the body for clinical diagnosis to treat diseases was quite difficult due limitations in the scanning system and exposure limits the patient could endure. The multi-slice technology has changed that. The Light Speed VCT and 64 slice imager can now capture any organ in 1 second, the heart and arteries in 5 seconds, and the whole body in less than 10 seconds.

The Light speed VCT represents the single most intensive R&D effort by GE Computed Tomography (CT). In order to project 64-slice scans, the rotating gantry incorporates a state of art collimator and detector robust enough to generate 64 channels of data while spinning at approximately 0.4 seconds per revolution. The collimator has 4 servo axis of motion controlling the X-Ray filtration during this process.

RENCO Encoders, Inc. is a key supplier to GE on the Light speed VCT scanner. There are four RCML15-2048 feedback encoders on the servo axes. The encoders generate 8192 (TTL) pulses every revolution utilizing RENCO's new OptoASIC technology. On 2 of the axes the collimator utilizes motorized positioning cams with RENCO's RCML15 encoders to accurately measure the position of the cams to filter the X-Ray. On the remaining 2 axes of motion the RCML15 encoders are used to position the filter substrate in and out in a linear fashion to improve dose management. One of the key features regarding the selection of this encoder is the small .35 "height profile with very high line counts. The Light speed VCT required many miniaturized components for faster scanning and lower mass of rotation.
