HAZMAT Training Services

HAZMAT training services train employees about the safe handling, storage and transportation, placarding, labeling, incident response, and document regulation requirements for hazardous materials (HAZMAT). HAZMAT training must be provided to any employee who is involved with the transportation of hazardous materials. These employees must be provided with hazardous materials training before performing any job, and retrained every three years. Each hazardous materials employee must track and report their trainings and certifications, which are defined by state, federal, and provincial departments of transportation (DOT).

HAZMAT training services focuses on three areas: awareness and familiarization of hazardous materials, function-specific training, and emergency safety training. Awareness and familiarization training teaches HAZMAT employees how to identify the type and amount of hazardous materials, confirm that a discharge has occurred; know the appropriate precautions for dealing with the hazardous material; know the municipal, county, and state regulations for dealing with the material; and understand how to communication the proper information to additional municipal representatives.

Function-specific and emergency safety HAZMAT training services are also required. Function or job-specific training provides general awareness of contact that employees have with hazardous materials based on their job. Instead of providing one general training course to all employees, function-specific HAZMAT training is more detailed and specific so that employees will be more efficient when working with hazardous materials. Emergency HAZMAT training focuses on the procedures of dealing with emergency situations. Topics covered in emergency hazardous materials training include reporting, evacuation, exit routes, rescues and medical, alarm systems, fire extinguishers, gas emergencies, hazard communication, mercury management, and planning. Other types of emergency HAZMAT training may also be offered.

HAZMAT training services understand various state, local, provincial and federal regulations. The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) stresses the value of having HAZMAT employers comply with HAZMAT employee training. PHMSA believes that effective training of employees can reduce the potential for accidents and incidences and protects the people involved, property, and environment. The Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR) HMR; 49 CFR Parts 171-180 regulation specifies the requirements for the safe transportation of hazardous materials by train, aircraft, vessel, and motor vehicle. Willful violation of HAZMAT trainings and procedures can have serious consequences with PHMAS, the DOT, and the DOT’s administrators: the Federal Highway Association (FHWA), the Federal Railroad Association (FRA), the United States Coast Guard (USCG), and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
