Legal services are lawyers, law firms, and providers of services related to intellectual property, incorporation, contract development, law suits, and other legal matters. They protect a company’s intellectual property and may specialize in areas such as patents, licensing, or trademarks. A patent is a document that grants an inventor the sole rights to an invention. In the United States, patents are issued by the Patent and Trademark Office (PTO), an agency of the U.S. Department of Commerce. A patent lawyer can provide advice and experience regarding trade secrets and rights of privacy and publicity. If necessary, unfair competition claims can be submitted before litigation is filed. Unlike a patent, a copyright is a personal property that can be willingly passed, bought, or sold by the owner. Legal services that specialize in copyright law and trademark infringement are commonly available.

Legal services may hire expert witnesses that can help defend a client’s intellectual property rights from patent, trademark, or copyright infringement. An expert witness is specialist in a technical field who can provide an informed opinion without having been a witness to events in question. Because a court can challenge the expertise of an expert witness, legal services must perform a thorough review of witness credentials in order to quality the specialist. Expert witnesses include scientists, engineers, insurance adjusters, and accident reconstructionists. They are usually paid for their time at a standard professional rate, or a rate that is negotiated by the law firm. In cases involving patent law, legal services may also perform extensive research to review previous claims and precedents.

Legal services provide services to clients and companies in fields such as complex chemistry, financial services, industrial equipment, medical devices, and Internet-based communication systems. They can also help resolve disputes over domain names or facilitate technological breakthroughs via the formation of partnerships. Many legal services that specialize in intellectual property are located in national, state, or provincial capitals in order to be closer to courts and legislative bodies.
