Remote Control Software

About Remote Control Software

Remote control software is used to manage devices and processes at remote locations. For example, remote desktop software can be used to control a personal computer (PC) at another office or location. Remote control software is also used to perform remote systems administration and to provide Help Desk support without an on-site technician. Telecommuters use remote control software to work from home while connected to their office computers. In this way, a home computer can function as a duplicate desktop or virtual desktop. Educators use remote computer access to instruct and monitor students at dispersed locations, as in distance-learning applications. Remote control software for server administration is also commonly available. Remote control software can function in duplicate desktop mode or virtual desktop mode. In duplicate desktop mode, the controlling computer displays an image of the controlled computer’s screen. This image is updated at intervals, or as required by actions (such as mouse clicks) that change the remote display. Typically, duplicate desktop software is used for technical support and education. By contrast, virtual desktop software is used by administrators who need to perform different tasks on the same server. When used in virtual desktop mode, the actions of the controlling computer may go undetected on the remote computer’s screen. In this way, a new user can perform tasks without disturbing system administrators who are already using this same server. Remote control software for remote administration software is often used with thin clients or dumb terminals. Remote control software differs in terms of features and capabilities. Applications may transfer remote screens in 2, 4, 16, 256, 65-thousand or 16-million colors; support the display of various remote computer cursors; and offer mouse-wheel support. Features for remote control software may also include full or partial keyboard control, support for multiple monitors, and two-way clipboard transfers. Some applications provide telnet and shutdown connection modes. Others incorporate phonebook records and provide drag-and-drop support. Text chat, voice chat, and send-message modes are also available. Support for multiple connections allows the viewing of another user’s computer screen, and the ability to view or control several remote monitors from the same computer.
