Industrial Storage

Industrial storage products include cabinets, containers, coolers, carousels, garages, hoppers, lockers, mezzanines, racks, shelves, shelters, storage tanks, and walk-in enclosures. Cabinets have access doors or drawers for containment and/or security. Containers are used for the storage and/or transportation of bulk materials. Coolers are insulated to ensure the proper temperature of stored products. Carousels are mechanized or automated and have a single access point. Garages have large entry doors for storing machinery, vehicles and equipment. Hoppers allow material to be dumped or dispensed. Lockers are used to store material in secure areas. Mezzanines are intermediate structures between the two main stories of a building. Racks and shelves include cantilever racks, gravity racks, reel racks, pick racks, drive-in racks, pallet racks, multi-tier racks, bar racks, flow racks, storage racks, and other rack types. Shelters are designed to house and protect instrumentation or personnel.  Storage tanks are general-purpose, bulk storage containers. Walk-in enclosures are industrial storage structures that permit operator access. They often contain power generation, communications, or X-ray equipment. 

There are many different types of containers for industrial storage applications. Gaylord^® containers are sized to match the length and width of pallets. Gaylord is a registered trademark of Gaylord Brothers, Inc. Intermediate bulk containers (IBC) have a capacity of not more than three cubic meters and are designed for mechanical handling. This category includes flexible intermediate bulk containers (FIBC) such as bulk bags or super sacks. ISO containers are used for the intermodal transport of freight. They are manufactured according to specifications from the International Standards Organization (ISO) and are suitable for multiple transportation methods such as truck and rail, or rail and ship. ATA cases are manufactured to meet the requirements of the Air Transportation Association (ATA), a trade organization for major airlines. Other types of containers for industrial storage include bags and sacks, basins and troughs, baskets, barrels, bins, blister packs, bottles and jars, boxes and crates, buckets and pails, cans, cartons, cylinders, drums and kegs, envelopes and folders, carrying cases, rack cases, pouches, safes, totes, trays and cups, tubes, and vials. Specialized containers are used for mold storage, die storage, coil handling / storage, roll handling / storage, sheet metal storage, and bar storage.

Selecting industrial storage products requires an analysis of specifications, materials, and special features. Specifications include volume capacity, depth or length, width or diameter, and height. Materials of construction include acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS), acrylics, aluminum, cardboard, composite materials, fiberglass or plexiglass, concrete or stone, fabric or cloth, foam or styrofoam, glass, metallized film, paper, plastic, polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), steel, stainless steel, steel wire, and wood. In terms of features, industrial storage products may be cantilevered, corrosion resistant, fireproof, insulated, locking, moisture resistant, multi-level, outdoor suitable, portable, static shielded, temperature controlled, or trailer mounted. Some industrial storage products provide protection against magnetic, electromagnetic (EMI), and radio frequency interference (RFI). Others allow the automated retrieval of stored items. Often, these industrial storage products are often referred to as automated storage and retrieval systems (ASRS).
