About Food Additives
Food additives are added to food products to enhance processing, texture, flavor or other characteristics. The number of processed foods has increased dramatically in the 20th century, introducing many more food additives of both natural and artificial origins.
According to the United States Food and Drug Administration, food additives are legally defined as, “any substance the intended use which results or may reasonably be expected to result-directly or indirectly-in its becoming a component or otherwise affecting the characteristics of any food.” Examples include flavoring extracts, syrups, emulsifiers, anti-oxidants, fortifiers and other substances.
