Zero Emissions Coal Plant
Can a coal-fired power plant have zero emissions at a reasonable cost? Power Generation magazine says that Australia plans to find out with a project aimed at developing their first zero-emissions coal-fired power station. Key to the projects is successfully storing greenhouse gases underground in local coal and gas fields. What do other engineers think of this? See for yourself at CR4 — GlobalSpec's Engineering Community. |
Ride the Tide
Wind and solar power come and go based on weather conditions, but tidal power is a renewable source that generates power at consistent and predictable rates. Power magazine says that is one of the reasons why Pacific Gas and Electric has agreed to undertake a comprehensive study of harnessing San Francisco Bay tides to generate power.

Select the Correct Connector
Connectors are a key component in any electrical or electronic system. This Electronics Engineer article shows you how to specify the right connector for your application based on factors such as how often the connection is unplugged, what type of energy is being transmitted through the connection, and the connector's operating environment. [A short registration is required.]

Apparel Tags Track Pipes
When a pipe producer wanted to track inventory and verify loads, RIFD Update says the last place they thought to look for reliable and durable RFID tags was the apparel industry. But system integration firm Barcoding Inc. found that tags specifically designed for use on metal didn't work, yet flexible adhesive tags created for garment tracking did.

A River Runs Through a Sensor Network
Sensors magazine reports that IBM and the Beacon Institute are designing and implementing a sensor system to environmentally monitor all 315 miles of the Hudson River in New York State. Because the amount of data acquired will be so large, the project will need advanced data gathering and processing capabilities. What do other engineers think of this? See for yourself at CR4 — GlobalSpec's Engineering Community. |

Rigged Power Meters
The China Post reports arrests of a criminal ring that rigged power meters to aid textile businesses in cheating the Taiwan Power Company out of millions. Cheating power companies isn't new; what is important is to determine how the criminals altered the meters' internal electronic mechanisms. No ideas have surfaced as to the method. |
Power as an Art Form
Pad-mounted electrical distribution transformer cabinets have always been a favorite target for graffiti, but The Coloradoan says that the Fort Collins Utilities and the city of Fort Collins have found a way to thwart taggers. Their innovative solution was to ask area artists to paint the cabinets. All six transformer cabinets have been graffiti free since they were painted.

Women Want a Balanced Career
Why are there so few women who rise from the managerial ranks to the executive suites at manufacturing firms? Some speculate that a glass ceiling is holding them back, but Control Design magazine suspects that more benign forces are at work, namely the propensity of most women to seek a balanced lifestyle as opposed to pursuing work with the single-minded focus necessary to get to a limited number of spots at the top.
