Battery Breakthrough Bars Breakdowns
Battery Breakthrough Bars Breakdowns

Lithium-ion batteries are the best available power storage technology for applications ranging from cars to cell phones to medical devices to PCs. Designers like their high energy-to-weight ratios, lack of memory effect, and slow loss of charge when not in use. But a chief drawback of lithium-ion batteries has been the complexity, cost, and poor accuracy of battery gauging systems. Electronic Design News says that a new impedance tracking chip from Texas Instruments trumps existing technologies by directly measuring the effects of discharge rate, age, and temperature on battery charge. Direct measurement allows the gauge to provide 99% accuracy, good enough for medical electronics used in life support systems.

Original DynaTAC Engineering Team from Motorola, Inc. Receives 2007 GlobalSpec Great Moments in Engineering Award
Original DynaTAC Engineering Team from Motorola, Inc. Receives 2007 GlobalSpec Great Moments in Engineering Award

On Wednesday, October 10, the GlobalSpec Great Moments in Engineering Award was presented to members of the original DynaTAC engineering team in honor of the 35th anniversary of the creation of the first portable, hand-held telephone.

This small band of engineers in Applied Research at the Communications Division of Motorola helped shape telecommunications history. Their work resulted in the DynaTAC, a portable, hand-held, mobile telephone showcased to the world in April 1973, and the precursor of today's cellular telephone.

DynaTAC Primary Designer Donald Linder accepted the award on the team's behalf at a ceremony held at Millennium Park in Chicago. John Walls, vice president of public affairs for CTIA (The Wireless Association) and Tracey Koziol, corporate vice president of Mid and High Tier Devices for Motorola, were on hand to recognize the team for their remarkable accomplishment. Nuke Waste Storage Costs Explode

Nuke Waste Storage Costs Explode Nuclear power is enjoying a resurgence due to low fuel costs, low emissions, and improved reactor technologies. But nuclear waste storage remains a huge roadblock. POWERnews reports more bad news with a recent increase in the Yucca Mountain storage site costs to $75.6 billion and a delay in site readiness to 2021.

Storm Center Data Goes Public
Storm Center Data Goes Public

Should electric utilities make outage data available to the general public in real-time? After investigating the pros and cons of releasing this sensitive data, Florida's SECO Energy said yes. T&D World reports that SECO's Storm Center gives outage information, and also provides estimated times to power restoration. Are such communications plans secure or silly?

Bloggers vs Connectors

Bloggers vs Connectors If you believe Internet blogs, connector problems may delay the start-up of the Large Hadron Collider. But physicsworld.com's official word is that problems exist with only a small percentage of connectors used in the collider and it is "business as usual" for bringing the new accelerator online. Time will tell who is right.

Relays Run Rambling Wrecks

Relays Run Rambling Wrecks This Components in Electronics article shows how automotive switches have progressed from mechanical monsters to solenoids to sophisticated electronic relays. Modern automotive relays work at high temperatures, fail safe upon power loss, and operate at very low noise levels. Relays can be networked together using automation protocols such as CANbus.

Seeing the Light at Nanoscale

Seeing the Light at Nanoscale Until now, you couldn't measure light passing through Nanoscale devices because there wasn't enough room for light to travel in a straight line. ISA reports on a Georgia Tech breakthrough that allows one to predict the behavior of light waves at Nanoscale; opening the door to new Nanotechnologies including solar thermal energy.
