Regulators Reject Coal

Regulators Reject Coal Consumers and businesses in North America and across the globe have an insatiable appetite for electrical power, but regulators are quick to reject new power plant permits. As reported in POWERnews, the latest regulatory rejection occurred in Kansas where the state's top environmental regulator denied an air quality permit for two proposed coal-fired power plants. The official word was that environmental threats to the state's residents were the main reason, but the behind-the-scenes scuttlebutt is that state officials were none too happy about a power plant being built in their state to supply power primarily to Colorado and Texas.

Regulators Readily Reject Renewables

Regulators Readily Reject Renewables Power project regulators are rejecting new projects at record rates. Implying environmental issues, the premise is that emissions-free power is preferred. Despite widespread support from environmental groups, boston.com reports that MA regulators say no to clean power as well by rejecting underground power cables from a proposed wind farm offshore of Cape Cod.

Bridge Collapsed, Transmission Towers Won't

Bridge Collapsed, Transmission Towers Won't The Tacoma Narrows in Washington State became infamous by the collapse of the "Galloping Girdy" suspension bridge in 1940. Tacoma Power proceeded cautiously when replacing an 80 year old transmission line located near the old bridge site. The project included specially designed cables to avoid the galloping effect that downed the bridge.

Ceramic Connector Seals Superior

Ceramic Connector Seals Superior There are four main ways of sealing electrical connectors: simple epoxy, a mechanical seal with an elastomer o-ring, glass seals, and ceramics. This azom.com article says that ceramics are best, but are the most expensive option. Ceramics have high thermal and mechanical shock resistance, exceptional corrosion resistance, and superior dielectric properties.

Solid State Relays Stand Short Circuits

Solid State Relays Stand Short Circuits The new NEC article 409 and the latest version of UL508A require designs and products to adhere to short circuit current regulations. As reported in electronicstalk.com, manufacturers are starting to release a range of products that comply. Notably among the first are solid state relays with UL-approved short-circuit current ratings.
