Wind Power Limits Imminent

Windmill

Wind power generation is touted as a non-polluting source of boundless energy, but the Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) in Canada is saying there are limits. AESO warns that Alberta province's grid cannot safely accommodate more than 900 megawatts of wind-power generation, a target that will be met late next year.

NEI Nuclear Notes claims the problem is that power usage and production constantly have to be balanced in an electrical grid, and adding too much unpredictable power creates risk of failure. In fact, the EU is investigating the possible role of Germany's heavy wind-dependence in a November 6, 2006 blackout that hit 10 million Europeans.
