Green Power Double Play
The hydrogen economy is often touted as a green solution, neglecting the fact that hydrogen is often generated by burning fossil fuels.
According to Sirti, a Washington State-funded economic development agency, InnovaTek and Chevron Technology Ventures plan to solve this problem by developing fuel processing technology that generates hydrogen from biodiesel.

Lightning Strikes Stifled
This T&D World article shows how to mitigate the effects of lightning strikes on optical-fiber composite overhead ground wire (OPGW). Unlike general ground wire, OPGW also provides a high capacity communication media.
Unfortunately, it has also proven more susceptible to lightning damage. Minor modifications to OPGW can greatly improve its resistance to lighting damage.

Concealed Hazards Can’t Hide
Most materials and chemicals have a unique terahertz spectral signature. Reading that signature can identify hazardous materials, but an ISA article says that difficulty arises because of the size and cost of terahertz detectors. Sandia National Laboratories is solving this problem with baseball-sized quantum cascade laser-based systems powered from a nine-volt battery.
