Is China Just an Assembler?

Is China Just an Assembler? Electronic Design News was at the recent Globalpress Electronics Summit 2007 and heard an interesting presentation on the state of China's manufacturing industry. According to renowned economist Henry Rowen, a senior fellow at Stanford University's Hoover Institution and a professor emeritus at Stanford's business school, "China is just an assembler, not an end-to-end manufacturer of products."

Rowen says that Taiwanese companies manage the manufacturing processes and control the end products in mainland China, but he cautioned against underestimating China's potential as a world-class competitor. Any country that can repel the advances of Yahoo and eBay is a force to be reckoned with.
