Utility Offsets Sierra Club Criticism
 POWERnews reports that construction of an 850 MW coal-fired plant could resume after a six-year hiatus. Construction will be allowed because of a settlement between Kansas City Power & Light and two local environmental and consumer groups. The utility agreed to "pursue offsets" for the carbon dioxide emissions from the plant.

Hoping for No Rain in Spain
 Environment News Service reports that Europe's first commercial concentrating solar power plant recently began operation in Seville, Spain. The 11 MW plant produces electricity with 624 large movable mirrors. Each of the 120 square meter mirrors concentrates the sun's rays to a solar receiver at the top of a 115 meter tower.

Corrosion Flames Failures in Florida
 Florida Power & Light found a 10% failure rate in 1,203 aluminum electrical connectors in underground junction boxes throughout Punta Gorda, FL. Connector testing was prompted by a recent fire that destroyed a home. An independent electrical engineer identified a corroded connector in an underground junction box as a contributing factor.

Free Wi-Fi for Frisco
 Wi-Fi Planet reports that Meraki Networks is installing a free Wi-Fi system in a square mile area of San Francisco. Meraki's goal is to give away 1,000 repeaters to anyone in the area including families, businesses, and community groups that will use the repeaters to extend the network's range.

 Sensors magazine summarizes a Strategy Analytics study that says cameras and smart sensors will be an integral part of a 63 million unit market for advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) by 2013. ADAS systems include adaptive cruise control, adaptive front-lighting, blind spot monitoring, lane departure warning, parking assistance, and pre-crash safety systems.

T&D World reports that ABB received an order for 24 power transformers to strengthen electricity grids in Beijing and ensure reliable power for the 2008 Olympic Games.

 A $40 device called the Kill-A-Watt Electric Usage Monitor plugs into any three-pronged U.S. 120 VAC outlet. The user then plugs an electricity consuming component such as an appliance or a TV into the monitor.
