Will Component Cost Rise with Size?

Will Component Cost Rise with Size? If you outsource manufacturing of electrical and electronic components, the announced merger of industry giants Flextronics and Solectron is bad news. ISA reports that Flextronics will pay $3.6 billion for Solectron, and one of the chief reasons for the merger is to improve margins. Some margin improvement is based on an estimated $200 million in cost-savings from merged operations. But eliminating a chief competitor should give Flextronics more pricing power.

Interestingly, a U.S. company is being taken over by a Singapore-based operation. Unlike recently muted acquisitions in other industries by China and Dubai based firms, this deal is unlikely to cause a stir. How will pricing affect you?

Engineers Making More Money

Engineers Making More MoneyNot so long ago, few engineers could expect to make over $100,000 a year. Control magazine's annual salary survey shows that this has changed (nearly doubled in just over two years) as about 28% of respondents reported annual earnings above $100,000. Other good news is that companies are doing more hiring, making fewer layoffs, and handing out more promotions, raises, bonuses, and vacations.

Engineers Make the Best Packages
Engineers Make the Best Packages

Grocery store buying decisions often are made based on the appearance, quality, and ease-of-use of packaging. Engineers in general and the packaging machines that they make and apply in particular play a critical role. Control Design magazine advises consumer product engineers (and execs) not to 'cheap out' on packaging lest they lose sales.
