Tailpipe Generator Saves Gas
Researchers in Germany claim thermoelectric generators mounted to vehicle tailpipes can cut gas consumption up to 7%. Reported in InTech, these generators convert the heat from car exhaust directly into electricity. The generators use the 700 C temperature differential between a vehicle tailpipe and ambient air to generate power.

Composite Cables Carry 3x Current
New electrical transmission capacity is sorely needed, but constructing new power lines is increasingly expensive. Electricity Today reports on a solution that increases existing power line capacity by up to three times. Compared to conventional steel reinforced cables, composite reinforced cables carry more power by safely operating at elevated temperatures with reduced line sag.

A Touching Solution
Basic touch screen technologies include capacitive, resistive, and infrared. Capacitive touch switches are one of the least expensive options, and this design note details how to use these switches with no external components. The touch sensor employs an 8 mm diameter sensing pad on the PCB using the solder mask as a dielectric.

Wireless Sensors Illuminate Lamp Inspection
Often, the biggest problem implementing and maintaining sensor systems is the cabling from the sensor to the control system. Wireless sensors eliminate cabling issues as described in this Industrial Ethernet Book application note. A robotic vehicle lamp assembly system experienced frequent sensor cable breaks until installing a wireless sensor system.

Engineering Salaries Skyrocket
The world economy seems to have split into two areas. One area is the slumping financial and housing sector, and the second is the booming industrial and commodities sector. Evidence of strength in the industrial sector is seen in Control Design's annual salary survey. Average pay for a controls engineer is up more than 8%. For example, the average salary of a controls engineer is more than $83,500. The average electrical engineer now earns more than $87,000.
