PC Sales Roar Ahead

PC Sales Roar Ahead It seems that one industry after another is booming in today's supposedly weak economy. Energy and metals are strong, as are many manufactured goods including PCs. EDN summarizes research from Gartner that estimates a 16% increase in PC sales for the 2nd quarter of 2008 as compared to last year. Pricing pressure on PCs remains a constant, but sales increases are dropping costs enough for manufacturers to increase profits. Large PC OEMs and semiconductor vendors are well-positioned to capitalize on PC growth. Mobile PC demand helped Intel to increase 2nd quarter net income by 25% from last year.

Keep Your Plant On-Line

Keep Your Plant On-Line The best way to keep power plants on-line and efficient is to monitor and analyze the performance of each critical component in real-time. This Power Engineering article shows how one system can monitor all components and processes even during load changes, start-ups, and shutdowns. The system monitors conditions at high speed in real-time.

Recloser Fits Smart Grid

Recloser Fits Smart Grid DTE Energy and S&C Electric are teaming up on a U.S. Department of Energy pilot project to test and install a new recloser. According to T&D World, the recloser features an open-close-open-dropout operating sequence with a 5-second reclosing time interval. This can reduce the number of temporary faults that lead to outages.

Nanotech Connector Industry First

Nanotech Connector Industry First Nanotech joins AC connectors with piezo ceramic connector bodies and housings. According to ecoustics.com, the connector body combines nano-sized ceramic particles and powdered carbon. The connectors use nano-sized polycrystalline ferroelectric ceramic particles that exhibit electro-generative properties — mechanical pressure creates an electrical charge.

Find Fiber Faults Faster

Find Fiber Faults Faster Fiber optic faults can be difficult to locate. Most are caused by broken splices or fibers, overly tight cable ties, or damaged connectors. One fault finder allows detection of these and other faults at distances up to 3 kilometers. A fault is indicated by a red laser light escaping from the cable at the fault point.

Are Governments Techno Illiterate?

Are Governments Techno Illiterate? When Future Shock author Alvin Toffler speaks, it pays to listen. His predictions have accurately come to pass. Control magazine summarizes a recent Toffler keynote address in which he pointed out that few political candidates have said anything as to how technology advances change society and wealth creation. When it comes to technology, the author questions if most governments are irrelevant, out of touch, or both?

World's Largest TV

World's Largest TV You can't get it through the door and into your house, it would take up an entire wall in the family room, and your spouse might leave you if you buy it. But hey, you would have the biggest TV in the neighborhood by a long shot. Crave reports on a 205 in. HDTV that dwarfs all competitors. There is little information on specs and pricing.
