Computing at the Speed of Light

Computing at the Speed of Light Today's integrated circuits control electricity, but tomorrow's ICs will offer a quantum performance leap by manipulating light. IBM took a major step towards light speed computing by integrating and controlling an electrically-driven Nanoscale light emitter based on a single carbon Nanotube. EDN says IBM researchers hit a milestone in the potential development of Nanotube-based Nano-photonic devices. IBM scientists furthered the development of carbon Nanotube transistor devices by controlling the light emission and by manipulating and directing light from a single carbon Nanotube. IBM believes that this work demonstrates an unprecedented level of control over electrically-driven light Nano-emitters.

Turbine Replacement vs Rebuild

Turbine Replacement vs Rebuild For many power producers, it's cheaper, easier, and faster to upgrade existing facilities than to build new plants. Power Engineering says one of the most beneficial power plant upgrades is turbine replacement or rebuild. This case study evaluates replacement versus rebuild for a 300 MW plant.

New Transformers Environmentally Friendly

New Transformers Environmentally Friendly A magneto optical current transducer instrument transformer works on HV networks up to 800 kV. T&D World reports the primary benefit as fast multiple analog 200 mV low voltage outputs capable of interfacing with several available microprocessor relays. Other benefits are the environmentally friendly oil and SF6 free design.

Aluminum Better than Copper?

Aluminum Better than Copper? Copper is assumed to be the best material for electrical connectors, but that assumption is being challenged by the superiority of aluminum connectors in industrial and commercial use. Product Design & Development shows why aluminum connectors are often more cost-effective, easier to use, and longer lasting than their copper counterparts.

Formula 1 Gets Connected

Formula 1 Gets Connected Nano-miniature connectors fit motor sports with their small size, light weight, and ruggedness. Electronicstalk shows how the connectors migrated from military use to NASCAR and Formula 1. Car designers like circular connectors for ease and speed of mating. Nano connectors may be the world's smallest with high reliability pins and sockets.

Check Engine Light On, What's the Problem?

Check Engine Light On, What's the Problem? When your car's "Check Engine" light comes on, it's usually because a sensor has picked up some problem. According to Sensors magazine, the problem is often a worn out oxygen sensor. Oxygen sensor failure means incorrect air-fuel ratio measurement, possibly damaging the catalytic converter and other major components.

Sensors Spot Gunshots

Sensors Spot Gunshots Wireless audio sensors are used by police departments across the U.S. to locate and pinpoint gunfire. RFID Journal explains how the sensor system quickly leads police to shooters, preventing further harm. The system detects gunfire using about 20 audio sensors installed on rooftops in areas where police are monitoring gunfire activity.

Calculated Cooling Challenges Critics

Calculated Cooling Challenges Critics Given the global warming hullabaloo and claims of scientific unanimity, it is surprising that the World Meteorological Organization just reported that the first half of 2008 was the coolest in the last five years. In fact, this Power magazine column says that global temperatures have been declining during the entire 21st Century. Data suggest that predictions of global warming acolytes are overblown. According to the UK's Hadley Centre, the first half of 2008 is the coolest since 2000, and global temperatures have declined since 1998.
