What's the Best Battery?

What's the Best Battery? Because wireless sensors typically don't have ready access to power, one of the most important decisions when implementing wireless sensors systems is battery type. This Sensors article gives a comprehensive analysis and comparison of alkaline, lithium, and nickel metal hydride batteries. There are two main rules to keep in mind. First, cold batteries store electricity well but are bad at supplying power. Second, the capacity of a battery is related to the level and duration of the current it is being asked to provide. With these two rules in mind, each battery type is analyzed for suitability in various applications.

Keeping Wind Power Online

Keeping Wind Power Online The electrical grid periodically experiences voltage drops for a variety of reasons. Unfortunately, this can knock wind power generators off-line, further exacerbating the voltage drop. This ISA article explains how researchers in Spain are developing undervoltage protection so that wind generators can continue operation during supply voltage dips.

Utility Replaces 7,000 Meters a Day

Utility Replaces 7,000 Meters a Day When a large utility decides to upgrade its electric meters, it's a huge challenge. Progress Energy of Raleigh, NC met this challenge by installing 2.7 million meters in 18 months. T&D World reports that the utility is saving $21 million per year because automated meter-reading technology reduces operating and maintenance costs.

The company leased 46,300 sq ft of manufacturing space to produce electrical connectors.

Solid State Stops Crashes

Solid State Stops Crashes Light planes crash too frequently and the problem can be faulty electromechanical relays. According to Flying magazine, the electrical systems of even newer light aircraft are relatively unchanged in 50 years. One start-up plans a plug-and-play system that replaces electromechanical relays and circuit breakers with solid-state components.

Rapidly Reduce Resistance

Rapidly Reduce Resistance Solid-state programmable resistors best electromechanical trimmer potentiometers in terms of automatic adjustability, miniaturization, and immunity to vibration. But EDN says solid-state resistors have relatively high minimum programmable resistance levels, typically tens of ohms. One way to reduce minimum resistance level is to add an op amp.

RFID Tests ID Winners and Losers

RFID Tests ID Winners and Losers All RFID Gen2 tags and readers aren't alike, say recent benchmark tests conducted by ODIN. RFID Update says RFID tests to identify servers, blades, laptops, and IT assets in data center and user environments revealed stark performance differences. Picking the right tags can mean the difference between success and failure.

Nano Drugs Attack Single Cells

Nano Drugs Attack Single Cells UCLA researchers have developed Nanoscale droplets much smaller than human cells that might deliver pharmaceuticals. Small Times says that the droplets are double emulsions, meaning one liquid is inside another with no mixing between the two. It may be feasible to load drugs in emulsions and inject them into single cells.

Medieval Stained Glass Purifies Air

Medieval Stained Glass Purifies Air Stained glass windows aren't just beautiful; they also act as solar-powered nanotech air-purification systems. InformationWeek says the gold paint used in medieval-era stained glass windows purifies air when heated by sunlight. These windows act as photocatalytic air purifiers with nanostructured gold catalyst to destroy air-borne pollutants.

University Research Facade?

University Research Facade? When evaluating news, it's always a good idea to find out if the author has been paid to promote a certain opinion. For example, global warming proponents receive more payments than do skeptics by a huge margin. But even in less politically charged areas of research, this Control Design piece shows how many supposedly academic, government, and other official studies are really just an exchange of money to validate the paymaster's preordained outcome.

Engineering Game Shows Big Hit

Engineering Game Shows Big Hit When engineers create a game show, you can bet that the objective is not to answer pointless questions. Instead, teams of contestants on the UK-based Scrapheap Challenge and the U.S. show Junkyard Wars have a set amount of time to build a working machine using scrapheap materials. Shades of Apollo 13. Machines built include a jet car, a car-crusher, and a catapult.
