Electric Boats Propel Navy

Electric Boats Propel Navy The phrase electric boat conjures up images of small remote controlled watercraft. But advances in technology are making electric propulsion systems a reality for even the largest ocean vessels. Conventional marine propulsion systems couple diesel engines or turbines to propellers via elaborate mechanical linkages. Electric propulsion systems use the ship's engines to generate electricity which is then routed to an electric motor that drives its propeller. Electric propulsion systems have a substantial advantage over conventional designs when a ship is frequently run at less than full speed and when a ship expends a high proportion of its energy to generate electricity for on-board use.

Clean Coal Construction Cleared

Clean Coal Construction Cleared Clean coal has some support — you might call it a change of hearth. But in Indiana, the utility regulatory commission recently approved a Duke Energy Indiana 630 MW Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) power plant. Regulatory approval was eased because IGCC is one of the cleanest ways to burn coal. What forms of energy do you think we should pursue?

See the Light

See the Light Light sensors are used in applications including optical-absorption spectroscopy, infrared detection for thermography, and two-color pyrometry. A major problem found when applying light sensors is eliminating influences from DC or very-low-frequency background light. This EDN article shows how to eliminate interference and measure the correct parameters.
