Clean Coal Construction Cleared
Clean coal has some support — you might call it a change of hearth. But in Indiana, the utility regulatory commission recently approved a Duke Energy Indiana 630 MW Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) power plant. Regulatory approval was eased because IGCC is one of the cleanest ways to burn coal. What forms of energy do you think we should pursue?

See the Light
Light sensors are used in applications including optical-absorption spectroscopy, infrared detection for thermography, and two-color pyrometry. A major problem found when applying light sensors is eliminating influences from DC or very-low-frequency background light. This EDN article shows how to eliminate interference and measure the correct parameters.

Fuel Cells Go Nano
This Small Times article describes how Nanotechnology is being used in fuel cells to significantly reduce size and costs. Initial designs improve conventional methanol polymer electrolyte membrane fuel-cell technology with Nanostructured catalytic layers and MEMS-based micro reformers. Other prototypes use designed molecules that self-assemble into membranes with targeted properties.
