Keep Steam Generators Online
Sensing and analyzing steam generator water quality is critical to power plant operation. Many plants don't adequately maintain online water sampling systems and are forced to rely on grab samples and lab analysis. Power magazine says online water quality analysis is critical, and shows how to keep sampling systems up and running.

Transformers Go Green with Soybeans
Immersing power transformer electrical components in petroleum-based oil has long been a favored means of insulation. But production, use, and disposal of this oil aren't environmentally friendly. ComEd addressed this issue by committing to annually buy 4,000 pole-top soybean oil filled transformers. The utility becomes the fourth largest purchaser in the U.S.

Combat Connector Commoditization
Electrical connectors would seem ripe for commoditization by low-cost manufacturers. But The News in Portsmouth, England reports that connector manufacturers are fighting back by moving up-market. One move is into high reliability connectors used in aerospace applications where quality is critical and price is a secondary factor.

Relays Replace Chips in Computers
Before semiconductors, relays were the brain of computers. New Nanotech relays may now be used to build modern relay-based computers. Computerworld reports that tiny mechanical computers will be far more energy-efficient than traditional semiconductors. They also will produce less heat and will withstand voltage spikes that can burn out ordinary processors.

Sensors Spot Tsunamis
Predicting tsunamis is the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's goal. That objective is possible with deployment of the final tsunami detection buoys in a 39 station network. Each sensor station has a bottom pressure sensor anchored to the seafloor, and a companion moored surface buoy that transmits data via satellite.

RFID Keeps Blood Flowing
Using RFID to track blood could reduce transfusion errors, and save 45,000 units of blood annually. It could also save $9 million annually. RFID Update reports that bar codes are widely used for blood tracking world-wide, but RFID is expected to improve safety and accuracy. The University of Wisconsin spearheads the research.

Nanobots Map Oil Deposits
Oil reservoirs often comprise rock formations with oil trapped in tiny pores. Saudi Aramco wants to use Nanorobots to penetrate these pores and gather information including pressure, temperature, and fluid type. Information gathered from the on-board memory of these Nanobots would map the reservoir. What other uses can you think of for Nanobots?
What do other engineers think of this?

Nanotech in Prime Time
The Nanotech industry must educate or risk being banned like genetically modified organisms. A TV series might help. 'Nanotechnology: The Power of Small' will air in the U.S. on public TV and explore Nanotech's impact on privacy, the environment, and health. More than $60 billion in Nanotechnology products were sold globally in 2007.

No Signs Make Safer Roads
You might call this a 'No sign of the times'. There are two schools of thought on how to make roads safer. Way out in first place are ever more signs, specific directions, and stringent enforcement through traffic light cameras and other technologies. Coming up fast in second is a movement led by Hans Monderman, a Dutch traffic engineer who hates traffic signs and considers them dangerous. So how do you build a safer road? Monderman says to make it appear dangerous.
