Hybrids Drive Component Demand

Hybrids Drive Component Demand Hybrid vehicles are at the forefront of low emission technologies. Compared to internal combustion engines, hybrids use higher voltages and have higher power requirements. Design News reports how this is creating a need for specialized electrical components that are compact, reliable, and use less power. Three examples of components are DC power relays, battery cooling systems, and power control units. The featured relays switch up to 60A at 400VDC and use a sealed gas-filled construction that produces a cooler arc during switching. The cooler arc means a reduced contact gap, 70% overall size reduction, and 50% less noise.

Flame Free Burner

Flame Free Burner Burning natural gas in turbines to generate power creates noxious emissions. Using an adiabatic combustor that burns gas without flames could greatly reduce harmful pollutants. ScienceDaily reports on Middle East researchers using flameless oxidation to burn natural gas with a very limited oxygen supply at extremely high temperatures.

Best Practices — Circuit Breaker Maintenance

Best Practices — Circuit Breaker Maintenance Proper maintenance and operation of circuit breakers is crucial to any electrical transmission and distribution system. T&D World describes how the transmission division of Hydro-Québec TransÉnergie maintains circuit breakers through corrective, conditional, and systematic maintenance. Corrective and conditional maintenance are repair tasks, systematic maintenance is an inspection task.

Faulty Connectors Cause Car Recall

Faulty Connectors Cause Car Recall Electrical connectors are often out-of-sight and out-of-mind. But according to MotorTrend, Chrysler is recalling 181,000 Chrysler Sebring and Dodge Avenger models built for the 2007-2008 model year because defective electrical connectors in the Tire Pressure Monitoring System are causing stalled engines, dead batteries, and failing cruise controls.

Relay Powers Auto Accessories

Relay Powers Auto Accessories After-market auto accessories often have high power requirements that can't be met by existing auto electrical systems. A patented universal design relay is designed to meet these needs by switching power up to 30A at 12VDC. Composites World reports that the relay can shorten accessory installation times up to 75%.

Cutting Through RFID Hype

Cutting Through RFID Hype It's often hard to find a dissenting voice amid the RFID hype, but many retailers and consumer goods suppliers currently see more RFID obstacles than benefits. These suppliers see insufficient return on investment as a prohibitive obstacle to RFID implementation. Most feel it will remain an obstacle for at least seven years.

Scientists Build Molecular Organic Resistor

Scientists Build Molecular Organic Resistor Most microelectronics devices are built from semiconductor compounds, but many think future devices will be made from complex organic molecules. ScienceDaily reports a key step down that path, a molecular resistor. It is built by depositing a single layer of carbon atom chains in tiny 100 nanometer deep wells on a silicon substrate.

Consumer Products Propel MEMS Market

Consumer Products Propel MEMS Market MEMS-based semiconductor sensors and actuators are rapidly moving from automotive apps to consumer products like video game controllers and cell phones. Experts predict annual growth of 19%. EE Times reports that MEMS-based semiconductor sensor and actuator sales will reach $9.7 billion in five years, up from $4.1 billion in 2007.

Microresonators Replace Quartz Crystals

Microresonators Replace Quartz Crystals Quartz crystals used to produce reference frequencies in digital circuits are relatively large, fixed-frequency, and not amenable to large-scale IC integration. A possible replacement is a silicon microresonator that vibrates at 4.51 gigahertz, the highest frequency ever recorded in a silicon device. It reaches high frequencies without compromising signal strength and stability.

Small Raises for Nanotech

Small Raises for Nanotech Sluggish economic growth means smaller raises, even in hot areas like Nanotech and MEMS. Nanotech applications in fuel cell development and battery storage are fueling growth, but overall commercialization has been slow. Small Times' third-annual compensation survey finds flat or modestly growing compensation with less than 20% of respondents receiving raises of 5% or more. Nearly 56% of respondents were from the U.S. or Canada, with the balance spread across 52 other countries.

Tail Lights Denote Deceleration

Tail Lights Denote Deceleration Because brake lights are only on/off, you don't know how quickly cars in front of you are stopping. Wouldn't it be nice to also know how fast cars in front of you are slowing? ISA reports on a new type of intelligent brake lighting system that changes color based on the rate of deceleration. Under hard breaking, additional lights flash.
