Mobile Wireless Sensors Measure Global Warming

Mobile Wireless Sensors Measure Global Warming Researchers are conducting studies in the Costa Rican rainforest to better understand the impact of greenhouse gases on the environment. Mobile, wireless, aerially suspended robotic sensor systems are being used because measurements need to be made over a large area. During initial deployment, robotic shuttles stopped at 1m intervals for 30s to allow sensors to take measurements. Measurements made include temperature, CO2, humidity, 3D wind movement, heat flux, solar radiation, and photosynthetic active radiation. Future plans include a system to deliver the data collected from the sensors to researchers and students worldwide via remote access through Web browsers.

Chinese Earthquake Imperils Hydropower

Chinese Earthquake Imperils Hydropower Recent earthquakes in China's Sichuan province damaged hydropower stations and reduced the nation's generating capacity by 5.5 GW. POWERnews reports that damages to other dams may further reduce capacity. Emergency repairs are underway to avoid potentially devastating dam bursts which could cause long term outages and downstream disasters.

Access Thermostats Via Internet

Access Thermostats Via Internet Industrial customers use demand electrical metering to control power use, reduce electric bills, and shave peak demand. T&D World says residential customers of Baltimore Gas & Electric are following suit with air conditioning and water-heater cycling programs. A key component is a programmable thermostat that can be remotely programmed via the Internet.

Can Nanotech Cause Cancer

Can Nanotech Cause Cancer A recent study calls carbon Nanotubes as harmful as asbestos. The study The Project on Emerging Technologies, found that long thin Nanotubes are dangerous, but not short or curly ones. Long thin Nanotubes are thin enough to penetrate deep into the lungs, and sufficiently long to confound the lungs' built-in clearance mechanisms.
