Next Three Semiconductor Killer Apps

Next Three Semiconductor Killer Apps What applications will drive semiconductor demand in the near term? EDN names three: smartphones, LED lighting, and solid-state drives. Smartphones will create demand for cellular base-station infrastructure and touchscreens. Analog electronics will be needed for cameras, flash drives, and smartphone components. LED lighting is expensive now, but when development drives cost down, watch for explosive demand. LED lighting should provide the energy savings of compact fluorescent lights while using no mercury. Solid-state-drive technology will replace hard-disk drives across the board in applications from servers to smartphones. Like LED lighting, solid-state drive price cuts will increase demand.

Critical Coal for Germany

Critical Coal for Germany Germany is known as an environmentally-conscious nation, making it difficult to build much needed coal-fired power plants. For an 800 MW power station in North-Rhine Westphalia, the answer is burning low sulfur bituminous coal in a highly advanced plant. Key components include the ultra-supercritical steam boiler and turbine.
