Don't Get Winded

Don't Get Winded Compared to power generation technologies like nuclear and fossil-fueled plants, wind farms seem appealingly simple. Build the wind turbine, connect it to the grid via a few simple power conversion devices, and start counting the money. But Power Engineering says not so fast. Wind farms require constant and on-going maintenance, especially the turbine and the grid connection. Maintaining correct turbine yaw and blade angles reduces asymmetric loads on the blades, bearings and hub — lowering stress loads on the turbine's rotating parts. Alignment must be continually checked and verified, because output drops by 1% for every degree of misalignment.

Introducing the Cash for Clunkers Development Tool Exchange
Microchip Technology, Inc.

Introducing the Cash for Clunkers Development Tool Exchange Microchip's Cash for Clunkers program allows embedded designers who are tired of looking at the faded paint jobs on their old tools to exchange selected models from Microchip's competitors for savings up to 30% — up to $120 — on select PIC® Microcontroller, memory, and analog development tools. But you'd better act fast — the program ends on October 30, 2009. Of course, Microchip will dispose of all exchanged competitor tools in an appropriate manner.

The Right Angle

The Right Angle ConnectorSupplier.com says the orthogonal midplane architecture can optimize printed circuit board backplane connections to maximize performance. Orthogonal midplanes have front and rear daughtercards positioned 90 degrees to each other on opposite sides of the midplane. This gives a direct connection between front and back daughtercard.

Simplified Soldering

Simplified Soldering Manufacturing operations that require hand soldered connections can be greatly improved using integrated preforms. Connector Specifier says linked solder preforms let manufacturers place a cluster of solder units in position in one motion rather than individually. Preforms eliminate placing washers on connector pins with tweezers.

Measure Height via Barometric Pressure

Measure Height via Barometric Pressure If you're a gadget freak, measuring height with a tape measure is way too prosaic, especially when you can build a complex electronic device to accomplish the same task. As described in Design News, the dodecahedral barometer determines a subject's height by measuring the difference in barometric pressure between head and feet. The gadget was inspired by the recent release of the inexpensive and accurate Serta model 270 barometric pressure sensor.
