Exciting Non-Destructive Testing

Exciting Non-Destructive TestingImagine checking for cracks in a gear without taking machinery apart, or checking the adhesive bonding on a Ford F-150 as it rolls off the assembly line. New technology can determine material defects through the use of infrared cameras and ultrasound excited thermography. This non-destructive testing (NDT) / non-destructive examination (NDE) technology operates on the interaction of thermal and elastic waves. Used in assembly lines or machinery inspections, elastic and thermal waves generate heat in material defects that are detected by infrared cameras, exposing defects caused by cracks, delaminations, poor bonding, or other material weakness. Is this new method of finding mechanical hysteresis in materials in your future?

Magnetic Bearings Forgo Friction

Magnetic Bearings Forgo FrictionMore engineers are using magnetic bearings in applications they never considered before. With no metal-to-metal contact, these bearings don't need lubrication and spin faster, allowing higher speeds and smaller machines that demand cleanliness. Motion Systems Design details how these bearings can provide longer operating life in new machinery designs.

Hardened Steel Helps Shafting

Hardened Steel Helps ShaftingSorry, but not all linear shafting is the same. While the shafting must be compatible with the bearing, the shafting is often just as vital to a design as the linear bearing itself. An independent study white paper from Pacific Bearing compares the hardened steel linear shafting with other materials.

Cushion Conventional Cylinders

Cushion Conventional CylindersBasketballs bounce; cylinders are not supposed to. When designing with nitrile-based rubber, pressed-to-fit seals in a machined grove on the piston, nearly 80% of the energy that causes cylinder bounce can be absorbed to extend the life of machinery. Read more about reducing wear with these seals.

Hygienic Seals Handle Heat

Hygienic Seals Handle HeatFood processing and pharmaceutical production machinery have to be designed to withstand sanitation methods that can damage many elastomers — including steam, caustics, or acids. A gasket that is compliant with FDA regulations can help eliminate seal intrusion as shown in this white paper from Garlock.

Spacer Accommodates Backlash

Spacer Accommodates BacklashA stiff spacer threaded at one end can take up the backlash normally done by a wavy washer, compression spring, or rubber washer. Designed by Kerk Motion Products, the axial take-up mechanism offers low drag toques and high axial stiffness by expanding to accommodate the wear which occurs during use.

Teen Repellant Prize Winner

Teen Repellant Prize WinnerIt's not the Nobel Peace Prize, but Howard Stapleton won the 2006 IgNobel Peace Prize for an electromechanical teenager repellant. This device, much like a specialized ring tone on cell phones, creates an annoying sound only audible to the younger generation. Read about the winners in ornithology, acoustics, and more.

First Rocketbelt Convention

First Rocketbelt ConventionBuck Rogers made these back-strapped jet-packs famous and Buzz Lightyear took them to "infinity and beyond," yet these personal human transporters haven't made their way into modern transportation. The first-ever convention brought together some of the early pilots of the rocketbelts and some newer inventors and designers.
