The Ebb and Flow of Computer Electrons
Researchers are investigating the possibility of a mechanical computer using nanoscale parts. Instead of using solid-state transistors and electronics to compute ones and zeroes, a nanomechanical computer would use moving parts — gates, and pillars and levers and pistons — to create switches, logic gates, and memory units, the building blocks of digital computers.
