Bearings Take On a New Roll
Conventional bearings have done their job for decades, but with increased energy costs, that job isn't good enough. In motor driven systems, experts estimate that 8.2 billion kWh/year are lost as a result of friction in bearings. Engineers claim they can do better by using improved bearing designs and lubricants.

Failing Before Their Time
Keeping on top of bearing condition is critical, with potentially severe consequences if symptoms are ignored. While oil and vibration analysis are most accurate, a thermal analysis is usually ignored until it's too late. This article describes the stages of bearing failure and several methods of monitoring bearing temperature to catch problems early.

Nuclear Camera Nabs Smugglers
The threat of smuggling nuclear material may someday be thwarted with a newly devised neutron scatter camera. Unlike earlier methods, the neutron camera can see through thicker shielding and from greater distances. It also can detect the source and the amount of radiation present. Researchers at Sandia National Laboratories say they are interested in perfecting the camera, and will eventually work to make it portable.
