Mechatronics Fall for the Wiles of the Wiki

Mechatronics Fall for the Wiles of the Wiki While Wikipedia has been taking hits as to credibility, the concept of Wiki's were first conceptualized in 1972 by Carnegie Mellon University in the form of the ZOG database system for a multi-user environment. Wikis have grown beyond a plain encyclopedia of knowledge and have become specialized, allowing interaction, collaboration, and social networking among devotees of a particular topic. Three of the more active wikis in the mechatronics field include Engineering at Wikia, Northwestern University's Wikia, and OpenMechatronics Wiki. Of course, all these wikis are new and developing, but keeping current on the latest technology is getting easier than a Google search.

Dynamic Energy Systems LLC
Combustion Engine Valve System — U.S. Patent 7,089,893

Combustion Engine Valve System — US Patent 7,089,893The R.S.V. System design is to increase engine horsepower. Utilizing exhaust energy and with no horsepower-subtracting valve train drag the R.S.V. System increases efficiency and power. Bringing a new system online with independent tests and co-development is the surest way to building a winning product. Use less fuel — keep the horsepower.

Rud Chain, Inc.
The StarPoint®

The StarPoint®The use of inappropriate lifting points and incorrect applications of eyebolts significantly increases the probability of failure. The solution to this problem is the use of proper lifting points that adjust to the direction of the pull. The RUD-VRS STARPOINT® and RUD POWERPOINT® offers a viable solution, as it adjusts to the direction of the pull. Learn more from Rud Chain, Inc.

Playing with Miniature Bearings

Playing with Miniature BearingsHigh-precision robots, aircraft, flow meters, computers, and medical instruments all use miniature ball bearings, often at extremely high speeds. But operating factors including size, application speed, and functionality often fall prey to the affects of axial and radial play. Knowing the design requirements helps prevent maintenance problems in the future.

Bearing Upgrade Orientation

Bearing Upgrade OrientationOlder equipment designs were often "over-designed" and generally allowed for easy upgrades. Today, though, over design adds costs that OEMs strive to avoid. But upgrading plant equipment is still feasible when thinking about replacing bearings to enhance production. Follow assembly and disassembly protocols, lubricate, and inspect regularly to achieve the best service life.

Gasket Standardization in Chemical Processing

Gasket Standardization in Chemical ProcessingGlobal efforts have led to standardization in pumps and piping systems in chemical processing. However, today even components used in chemical processes are rapidly facing the same pressures. Nearly 75% of North American chemical processors are initiating gasket standardization, aiming for a single gasket that can be used anywhere for any application.

Making "Cents" of Sealing Costs

Making 'Cents' of Sealing CostsLiterally thousands of dollars can be lost without the correct mechanical seal; often the smallest cost of a pump. Temperature, materials running through pipes, machinery downtime, and even mechanical staff training all factor into the ultimate cost of seals. This Fluid Sealing Association article shows that seal costs can be recognized and controlled.

Twenty Answers about Constant Force Springs

Twenty Answers about Constant Force SpringsFrom "What is a constant force spring?" to their advantages and applications, and a discussion of variable force springs, you'll have your pressing questions answered. Also covered are specifying the load or torque, number of turns needed, minimum fatigue life and space envelope, and even how to have the springs manufactured to a particular application.

Specifying Springs

Specifying SpringsWe're not talking about when the groundhog sees his shadow, but rather the design formulations that you need to consider when designing or specifying springs. This technical data sheet allows engineers to consider the initial tension, stress correction factors, and number of active coils needed in creating springs to fit the design.

Designing Ergonomic Hand Tools

Designing Ergonomic Hand ToolsReducing work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) often comes down to the design of a hand or power tool. Designing tools that are lightweight, with handles shaped to fit the human hand in materials that allow a grip but reduce vibration is a challenge. Read suggestions that help engineers in creating ergonomically smart tools.

Non-Mechanical Impact Driver

Non-Mechanical Impact DriverReleasing a rusted bolt or nut can be a mechanic's nightmare. But a retired Australian mechanical engineer came up with a non-mechanical impact driver — a simple tool comprised of two components that creates the necessary twisting force to loosen even the most stubborn bolt or nut.
