Mechanical Knowledge Revealed with Simulation Software

Mechanical Knowledge Revealed with Simulation SoftwareBy applying CAD and FEA software, the technical genius and secrets of the Great Pyramid of Giza are being revealed one section at a time to tell us how the ancient Egyptians built the tombs. Engineering software helped French architect Jean-Pierre Houdin and engineer Richard Breitner when they used a manufacturing process simulation to determine how long it took to build the pyramid.

Their hypothesis: the pyramid was built from the inside out. A frontal ramp used to place the lower half of the pyramid was disassembled and used to complete the upper portion. This new blend of technology and archeology may lead to long-buried secrets of ancient civilizations.

Keeping the Wheel in Motion

Keeping the Wheel in MotionBearings, as most know, help keep wheels in motion. But what if the wheel is more than 15 stories tall, holding 40 passenger gondolas, and operating 363 days of the year? The spherical roller bearings and a portable data collector keep the Navy Pier Ferris Wheel in Chicago moving with little maintenance.

Doubling the Life of Bearings

Doubling the Life of BearingsHauling 80 tons of coal and dirt at a time from the earth isn't a job for wimpy machinery. When these machines break, repairs can cost $5000 an hour. In order to keep these mining electric shovels operating, a spherical roller bearing cartridge design pays off, nearly doubling the shovels' working time.

Smart Seals Go Below Grade

Smart Seals Go Below GradeAs sensing materials grow smaller, they find unique mechanical components to "hide" in — such as seals designed for oil drilling equipment. These smart seals will soon report potential failure (using chemical analysis), as well as temperature, torque, and rotational speed, with embedded fiber optics and power supplies.

Let's Get Technical

Let's Get TechnicalSometimes you need to get technical about fabricated components and materials for use in industrial, electronic, and medical applications. This handbook from the Gasket Fabricators Association offers procedures and dimensional tolerances, plus material thickness, tolerances, and dimensions. It also covers Quality Assurance, SPC, processing equipment, and materials. Simple registration is required to download the handbook.

Mini Cooper Skiing — an Olympic Sport?

Mini Cooper Skiing — an Olympic Sport? We've all been faced with challenging applications. But, how does an engineer keep the rocket housing motor from detaching off of a Mini Cooper designed to fly down an Olympic ski slope in Lillehammer? Read about how simple spiral retaining rings sprang to the rescue!

Springs Measured to Military Metal Standards

Springs Measured to Military Metal StandardsThe U.S. Department of Defense in the FY2007 Defense Authorization Act was granted the opportunity to create a Strategic Materials Board. In order to sell to military programs, spring wires must be sourced from the U.S. or a qualifying country. Spring manufacturers have scrambled to determine if their materials will pass military muster.

Two Dozen Chain Saws Rolling up the Highway

Two Dozen Chain Saws Rolling up the HighwayPulling the individual starting cords of 24 chain saws takes a couple minutes, but this chainsaw motorcycle can kick out 5.2 kW at 10,000 rpm. The combined power of 24 chainsaw engines is fed into a five-speed Harley-Davidson transmission by a series of twelve toothed belts. This video brings new meaning to cutting through traffic!

Assembly Tools Go Cordless

Assembly Tools Go CordlessCordless tools have always been about power — not enough power. But these cordless impact wrenches offer a battery power supply in 7.2, 14.4, and 19.2 volt sizes. They run on nickel-cadmium or lithium-ion rechargeable batteries. Microprocessor controlled battery and charger indicate battery life and keep tools running at optimum charge.
