Dive! Dive! Dive! with Bearings Moving through water is easy if you are a fish, but for a human-engineered submarine, it takes linear guide systems and spherical bearings, as well as great ingenuity. Borrowing a gearbox design from an exercise machine for propulsion, a 12-student team from Sussex County Technical School (NJ) incorporated these vital components into their entry in the 2007 International Submarine Race.

Tune In to a Molecular Bearing Simulation
While the more popular You Tube videos show teens in silly stunts or girls dancing to the latest country shows, there are some interesting technical videos accessible on the site. But this one is also educational bearing-wise. In particular, the video simulation depicts a low-friction bearing on a rotating shaft at room temperature.

Multiple Choice for the Right EMI Gasket
With several factors that need to be considered in designing EMI shielding into products, the easiest thought is to look at three options in selecting the most effective shielding gasket for electronic equipment such as computers, medical devices, and even cell phones. The EMI solutions are conductive fabric over foam, conductive elastomers, and beryllium-copper strips. The product needs determine the gasket.

Seals Aren't Cheap if They Fail
Mechanical seals are ubiquitous with manufacturing machinery. Yet, while they cost pennies to put in a design, seal failures can be costly. One way to save both cash and time is monitoring the performance and replacement of mechanical seals. By answering a series of questions — about pressure, discharge, temperature range, and pump type — monitoring seal functionality gets a little easier.

Your Worst Nightmare Is Catastrophic Failure
Be it ductile or brittle, metal failure on springs is not a pretty sight, but the Component Failure Museum proudly displays these failures in hopes that others can avoid metal fatigue, manufacturing faults, and simple corrosion problems. View the photos of failures that range from reversed bending to torsional fatigue, then review the pertinent failure details.

Compression Springs 101
Several factors to consider in compression spring design include materials, manufacturing processes, dimensional/load requirements, and the service environment. Designing in enough space so that a spring can function properly is also paramount. Check out the other critical issues for functional compression springs in your designs.

Be Cool, Cut the Coolant
When it comes to shop machines, the use of air or oil mist coolants has been a lifesaver, providing a variety of economic, as well as ecological benefits. But minimum quantity lubricant use has its limitations within the equipment, and matching the technique with the tools is also an important consideration.
