GM's Volt Charges Auto Design Debate

GM's Volt Charges Auto Design Debate A plug in car that won't hit the streets until late 2010 has already sparked years of debates, but General Motors' announcement during its 100th anniversary celebration gave Automotive News writers pause to consider what the introduction means for design trends. Besides a tough test for competing lithium-ion battery packs that are supposed to give the car a 40-mile cruising range, a 150,000 mi. service life, and a 100 mph top speed, the Volt's entrance may signal a more significant point in auto history — a shift in emphasis from mechanical to electrical systems.

High Temp Bearings on a Budget

High Temp Bearings on a Budget Bearings made from powder metal have served for decades, with high marks for economy. Now, better control of raw materials, use of synthetic oils, and ability to spec tighter on key properties like oil content make self-lubricating bearings more attractive in other applications, including high temperature roles.

Shout It from the Rooftop

Shout It from the Rooftop Bearings can be the unsung component that makes or breaks a project. In this video, a machine forms huge roof trusses for the skate oval in Vancouver for the 2010 Winter Olympics. Behind the scenes, a combined axial and radial rail bearing manages radial force loads up to 40,000 lbs.

Portable Probes Illuminate Problems

Portable Probes Illuminate Problems Why do repair tasks always lead to dark corners or tight spots behind other equipment? These LED fiber optic probes, with diameters as narrow as 0.03 in., can shine some light for inspections inside engine compartments, interior of molds, behind HVAC units, and the like.

Grit Reducing Grinder

Grit Reducing Grinder Serious angle grinders — ones that cut and grind metal and concrete and won't disappoint with short motor life — need tough duty design. Longevity boosting features include those that keep dust and grit out of the motor: an encapsulated switch, double sealed ball bearings, epoxy coated windings.

Tunable Polymers Promise Power Pronto

Tunable Polymers Promise Power Pronto If wind and solar energy ever succeed in delivering a healthy share of power, we may have plastics to thank. Penn State engineers are developing polymer-based capacitors that can hold electric charge at room temperature, and deliver that charge more rapidly. The dielectric polymers could also serve in computers.

Non-Stick and Strong as Steel

Non-Stick and Strong as Steel The mixer blades or rotary pump vanes you're working on need non-stick surfaces. But you lodge the common complaint: chemical resistant poly coatings wear out too quickly. This arc-sprayed coating process could suffice: it combines the strength of stainless steel with the low friction properties of favorite non-stick fluoropolymers.

Fastening on Crowded Circuit Boards

Fastening on Crowded Circuit Boards A growing design challenge today is mounting hardware on more crowded printed circuit boards. This overview of new surface mount fasteners reveals a way to eliminate manual placement of hardware on the PCB, making use of the same soldering and automated pick-and-place process that mounts electronic components.

Restraint System for the Sky

Restraint System for the Sky A damper technology that brings roller coasters to a smooth stop could soon increase safety for para-rescuers, gunners, and crew who remain mobile during military flights. Wright-Patterson Air Force Base is testing a system that automatically adjusts tension on restraining belts based on the force applied during maneuvers.

Dealing Robots a Better Hand

Dealing Robots a Better Hand Through the ages, industrial system designers have tried to mimic the dexterity of human limbs, especially the hand. Engineers have yet to create robotic parts that work as well as the genuine article, but firms are closing the gap on mechanical hands that will unlock more of the 'flexible automation' potential of robots. Flexible handed robots might change the entire equation.
