Nanoclays: Worth Their Weight in Freight The pervasive 'performance-per-pound' design objective seems more imperative than ever. Indeed, weight reduction tops many must-do lists. Yet not all projects aim solely at energy conservation goals. Weight savings in one place sometimes translates to opportunity elsewhere. A prime example is Navistar's use of nanoclay technology. The truck maker employs nanoclay fillers instead of glass microspheres in molding compounds for hoods, trimming weight by over 20%. Besides a large surface area, Navistar likes nanoclay for its flexural modulus and surface smoothness. Over-the-road haulers like it, too, since cutting just 20 lbs can save them big bucks; and more cargo per load means fewer overall trips.
