Take Two Bearings and Call in the Morning
Precision ball bearings with ground raceways are pivotal components in alternative back pain treatment. Equipment for treating spinal compression holds a patient stationary while a lower mattress moves to stretch the patient's lower body. The design reduces slipping or sticking that occurs when using plastic or composite slides.

Science Keeps the Bearings Running
Most engineers appreciate the upside (correct lubrication extends bearing life) and downside (lube failure leads to bearing failure). This report can enhance the science you apply in evaluating greases, oils, or dry lubricants, considering factors ranging from bearing design and operating speeds, to temperatures and lube intervals.

Pocket Protector for Bearings
Motor shaft voltages that discharge through machine frames and bearings can degrade lubricants and cause bearing failure. Wider use of variable frequency drives has increased the risks. This non-contact pen, held near the motor, counts electrical discharges and helps operators avoid situations that shorten bearing or machine life.

Verifying Bearing Torque
Some manufacturers can't verify bearing ratings because accurate bearing torque gages are hard to find. This Rotational Electromechanical Assembly Press helps ensure the bearings will meet efficiency needs. The device controls load and rotation while measuring torque values, while the bearing sits in a frictionless fixture.

Flexing Micro Muscles for Med
This acquisition could expand the use of electrically conductive polymers. An Irish company announced its plans to develop devices based on Micromuscle. The polypyrrole material changes volume when electrically stimulated (1-2 volts), permitting control of mechanisms in medical leads, catheters, and drug delivery products.

Mating Nanoparticles with Polyurethane
Researchers developed a method that resolves compatibility problems between nanoparticles and polyurethane coating hardeners. They created nano-modified binders used to formulate polyurethanes with high resistance to dry and wet scratching, solvents, chemicals, and water — and still retain the desired glossiness of conventional two-component clearcoats.

Fast Look at a Fast Fastener
This video clip conveys how quickly this non-marring hub fastener works. In a system designed for frequent removal, slots are machined into the hub, creating a cantilever section. As a cap screw is tightened, the cantilevered section securely clamps onto the shaft. The screw can be tightened repeatedly without marring the shaft.

Beefed-up Transfer
With many products getting lighter, you'd think conveyors could lighten up, too. But one company is going the other way, introducing a heavy-duty, low-maintenance transfer system. The beefy new conveyor features a high-efficiency drive system and a roller design that requires no lubrication. It can transfer loads up to 660 lbs.

Elementary, My Dear Watson
Perhaps some thought the Man vs Machine contests were put to rest after an IBM supercomputer defeated super chess champ Kasparov. Yet IBM is seeking a tougher human challenge. Its new supercomputer Watson is being prepped to compete on Jeopardy, though its creators are concerned the machine may still be too elementary. Because Watson can't communicate like humans, it will rely on text messages instead. The real question is who will be using artificial intelligence, Watson or the humans?

Tiny Bubbles Divulge Dolphin Strength
They stumped zoologist James Gray 75 years ago, but dolphins finally showed the muscles giving them incredible acceleration. RPI researchers created a diagnostic technology combining force and flow measurement techniques, then videotaped dolphins swimming through thousands of tiny air bubbles to calculate the source and the forces dolphins were producing. The technique used to track and measure the water flow around the retired U.S. Navy bottlenose dolphin is called Digital Particle Image Velocimetry (DPIV).
