Self-healing Polymers: Not Science Fiction

Self-healing Polymers: Not Science Fiction Self-healing isn't fiction for polymers. The race to commercialize self-repairing polymers heated up with news from programs at the University of Southern Mississippi, the University of Warwick, and the University of Illinois. Closest to commercial release, the U. of Illinois polymers require no external intervention to initiate mending. Embedded microcapsules rip open when the coating is scratched, releasing a polymer and a catalyst that forms siloxane. The Warwick technology involves polymers coated with silica-based nanoparticles; a material that can be tailored to let precise levels of water or air pass. The Mississippi mix has polyurethane networks that trigger self-repair when exposed to ultraviolet light.

Low Tolerance for Motor Noise

Low Tolerance for Motor Noise To squeeze more performance from electric motors, engineers seek to minimize vibration and noise. This article highlights use of tolerance rings to mount motor bearings. Research shows that joints are less stiff than traditional press-fit or glue mounts, helping provide smoother operation — and extended bearing life.

Simplifying Coating Analysis

Simplifying Coating Analysis Identification of unknown alloys often requires many steps before quantitative analyses can proceed. An X-ray technique automates the determination, saving time and reducing need for skilled technicians. The technique could prove useful in electroplating, finding alternatives for leaded solders, and verifying thickness and content in precious metals.
