Deciphering Toxin Breakdown
Keeping to the pyromaniac theme on a much smaller scale — solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy has revealed information about the structure of "Mother Nature's blowtorch," as a system of enzymes is called, that breaks down toxins. The technique achieved what x-ray crystallography could not, separately imaging the rigid and the mobile sections of two proteins.

What's in that Chicken?
Pesticides and antibiotics leave residues in both food and water. Novel methods for detecting these residues include combining cathodoluminiscence detection with flow injection analysis and high performance liquid chromatography. The research focused specifically on carbamates, a widely used pesticide family, and on sulfonamides, a group of wide-spectrum antibiotics commonly used in medicine and veterinary science.

Counting Chromatography Columns
Two new chromatography columns are available for labs and industry. The first is a medium polarity gel permeation chromatography/size exclusion chromatography column (GPC/SEC) for use in polar polymers not necessarily water-soluble. For trace analysis detection in food, flavor, and fragrance applications, an ultra-low bleed wax column is designed for gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS).

Fluorescence Scanning for Cancer
By shining a laser on surface veins, such as those on the wrist and inside the cheek, Purdue University researchers are able to reveal and count circulating tumor cells. The noninvasive technology allowed researchers to seek fluorescence signals from a much larger volume of blood. Smaller samples might not show the cells.

A number of DUI cases in different states have tried this tactic. And some companies are providing the source code, which allows defendants to turn Q&A department and put the instrument maker on the defensive.
