Finding Brain Stem Cells

Finding Brain Stem Cells Proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) provides a method to see the few stem cells that remain in living adult human brains. Unlike other parts of the body (such as hair and skin) which constantly renew themselves, our brains and nervous systems make very few new neurons once we have matured. But a few persist. Now that we can see them, researchers have a tool to monitor how active they are, and whether they create new neurons. A Science report suggests that MRS imaging may lead to improved diagnosis and treatment for depression, Parkinson's disease, brain tumors, and a host of other disorders.

Spying a Spider

Spying a Spider Researchers spied an ancient spider with an imaging technique developed for medical use: Very High Resolution X-Ray Computed Tomography. Using the method on the 53 million-year-old spider fossil, they were able to 'digitally dissect' the 1 mm-long arachnid, creating 3D images of its exterior and internal organs. Superfocusing Light for Microscopes Borrowing a page from radio and microwave transmitters that use antennae, researchers report creating antennae for infrared laser light. The laser Nano antenna devices allow light to be focused to a much tighter area, which could improve the resolution of both microscopes and infrared spectrometry. Have Seismograph, Will Travel

Have Seismograph, Will Travel Antarctica is the last frontier, and there's a lot we don't know about the polar ice cap, or the land beneath it. A group of researchers are changing that, or at least, they plan to install 10 seismographs each in the east and west parts of Antarctica, and an additional 20 instruments next year. It will be summer in Antarctica, with temperatures maxing out at -30°F.
