Science Debunks Saint's Remains

Science Debunks Saint's Remains St Joan of Arc was burned at the stake in 1431. Remains supposedly found at the stake have been accepted as relics. But when researchers investigated the remains using techniques including mass, infrared, and atomic-emission spectrometry, electron microscopy, and pollen analysis, they didn't add up. Microscopic and chemical analysis of the black crust on the rib showed it wasn't burnt. Carbon-14 analysis dated the remains to centuries earlier and spectrometry profiles matched those from Egyptian mummies. Finally, odor analysis (used in the perfume industry) found hints of vanilla — found in mummies, but not in charred remains. Result: the relics are not those of St. Joan of Arc.

Mass Spectrometry IDs Dinosaur Protein

Mass Spectrometry IDs Dinosaur Protein A mass spectrometry technique provided the sequence of a 68 million-year-old protein and thus identified it. The protein was recovered from the bone of a T. rex. When a researcher demineralized the ancient bone, she found that a collagen matrix remained, according to a report in the April 13 issue of Science.

Making Hay While the Sun Shines

Making Hay While the Sun Shines Researchers used 2D electronic spectroscopy, which allows one to follow the flow of light-induced excitation energy through molecular complexes with femtosecond temporal resolution, to unravel the mystery of how photosynthesis can be so efficient. Green plants and cyanobacteria convert sunlight into chemical energy with nearly 100% efficiency.

New Car Smell Nontoxic

New Car Smell Nontoxic Feel free to breathe that new car smell: those volatile organic compounds may not be so bad after all. Samples from new cars were analyzed by a gas chromatography-mass spectrometry system equipped with a carbon dioxide oven cooling system, a HP-5 capillary column, a flame-ionization-detector (FID), and a mass selective detector. The VOCs showed no detectable toxicity.

Detecting Drugs in Fish

Detecting Drugs in Fish Amid growing concern about the accumulation of pharmaceutical and personal care products in fish and other aquatic organisms, scientists at Baylor University in Waco, TX developed a liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry method that can screen fish for up to 25 drugs simultaneously.

Imaging MS

Imaging MS Three microscopic imaging techniques: sum frequency generation, two-photon-excitation fluorescence, and coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering can be used simultaneously to learn about the molecular mechanisms of multiple sclerosis. The combined imaging method shows how MS causes an overproduction of astroglial filaments and degrades the myelin sheaths over nerves.

Chem-Analysis for Pharmaceuticals

Chem-Analysis for Pharmaceuticals A near-infrared chemical imaging system won an Innovation Award, a new award instituted by the technical journals PROCESS, PharmaTEC, and Schüttgut. The SyNIRgi system won in the Materials Analysis and Characterization section. Chemical imaging is being used increasingly by the pharmaceutical industry. The system was introduced this year at Pittcon.

Untangling Metallic Messes

Untangling Metallic Messes How do dissolved metal ions interact in solution? It's a question that can affect how we clean up toxic messes ranging from industrial to nuclear waste. When researchers applied X-ray scattering techniques to the problem, they were able to see ion structures in solution as well as reveal interactions with other ions.

Bacteria Tip the Balance

Bacteria Tip the Balance A mosquito-sized biosensor can detect amazingly small amounts of disease-causing E. coli bacteria in food in a single-step process taking only minutes. The sensor incorporates a tiny vibrating cantilever, coated with antibodies for E. coli, anthrax, or specific proteins. Antigens that bind to the antibody alter the frequency of the vibration.
