Three Pounds of Mass Spectrometer
A small spectrometer allows portable liquid and direct air sampling to detect volatile and semi-volatile chemical targets. The mass spectrometry system is comprised of the Griffin 450 gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer (GC/MS/MS), multiple-sample introduction methods including the handheld Griffin X-Sorber, and enhanced supporting software.

Spectrometer on the Small Side
A spectrometer the size of a pea consists of miniature optics, a microfabricated container for atoms in a gas, heaters and a photodetector, all within a cube about 10 mm on a side. The device could calibrate laser instruments. The new spectrometer was described in Optics Express.

The width of peaks in the chromatogram depends on column kinetics, which relies on column length, particle size, flow rate, etc. L. R. Biochips for Faster Analysis
With a tool for high throughput affinity chromatography combined with sample focusing, EC-Affinity biochips allow researchers to generate the signal-to-noise ratio necessary to detect extremely rare proteins. This can be used to find disease-indicating proteins or to learn the impact drugs, chemicals, or pollutants have on cellular protein production.

Probing Gentler AFMs
A controller for atomic force microscopes promises to allow gentler nondestructive probing of delicate samples in liquid or air. The controller is suited to high resolution and force sensitivity applications in biology, polymers, and surface science. The device has an operating frequency range as wide as 6 MHz, and allows higher harmonic imaging.

Magnetic Imaging Options
Bismuth ferrite (BiFeO3) is a fascinating (and potentially useful) material because it exhibits both ferroelectricity and antiferromagnetism. Researchers used a novel electrode setup to perform piezoelectric force microscopy on bismuth ferrite, and obtained time-resolved images of ferroelastic domain switching. The setup opens the door toward magnetoelectric domain imaging.

Phase-Shifting Interferometry
Many fields, ranging from astronomy to optical analytical instrumentation, require careful control of optical wavefronts. But our eyes can't see wavefronts directly. In SPIE Newsdesk, researchers describe a simple point-diffraction interferometer with phase-shifting capability (that also is stable to noise) made using a pinhole fabricated from a lithium niobate crystal.

Money for Nanoscale Metrology
SEMATECH funds research into semiconductor manufacturing. The international non-profit consortium is understandably interested in metrology and calibration: the group inked a seven year $300M proposal, which will provide $25 million for to research at colleges and universities in New York state, including the Nanoscale Metrology and Imaging Center in Albany.
