R&D Favors GC and Spectroscopy

R&D Favors GC and Spectroscopy Advances in X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and gas chromatography (GC) have occurred through optimized systems and advances in coating technology. In a feature in R&D Magazine, author Martha Walz describes how XPS (or NanoESCA) can be used to analyze the surface chemistry of a material with specificity down to tens of microns. NanoESCA combines photo emission electron microscopy with spectroscopy. The second half of the feature discusses Inferno columns from Phenomenex. These consist of capillary gas chromatography columns that provide stable performance at temperatures higher than 400°C for industrial petrochemistry as well as environmental, toxicology, and food and beverage applications.

SFC Grows in Popularity Supercritical Fluid Chromatography (SFC) is growing in several ways. Thar Instruments bought SFC pioneer Berger from Mettler. On the popularity side, SFC, called normal phase chromatography, uses much less solvent than other chromatography methods and provides complimentary HPLC selectivity.
