To Your Health! You bet your life on it: in a flu epidemic, an antiviral medicine like Tamiflu could save your life. But not if the capsule is a counterfeit, without the active ingredient, oseltamivir. The high demand for the drug, as well as its high cost ($6.50 per pill), make it an attractive target for counterfeiters. At April's American Chemical Society national meeting, researchers described a fast, high-throughput, and relatively easy method for detecting counterfeit Tamiflu using desorption electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (DESI-MS). The one-step DESI-MS process can determine if this public-safety-related drug is real or fake in less than one minute.
