Zinc Oxide Fuels New Applications
In a recent Semiconductor Today feature article, Dr. Mike Cook focuses on the current development trends involving zinc oxide (ZnO) and the material's potential for use in a myriad of applications. In particular, he reviews zinc oxide's p-type problem and discusses how its piezoelectric properties and wide bandgap make it an attractive candidate for electromechanical systems and light emitting and detection applications. His article also addresses current developments in nano-piezotronics, using devices constructed from zinc oxide nanowires. Scientists are studying the use of ZnO nanowires with a view to produce single-photon detectors.

The Widgetator
Timothy, an engineer, is designing the Widgetator™ assembly, which will only widgetize properly if two components are soldered or brazed and two components are welded. Brazing two components will enable high speed widgetation. Timothy needs one soldering and welding joint material for quantity, discount purchasing. A satellite designed to measure solar power is in an equatorial geostationary orbit. Every year on June 20th the satellite measures the incident solar power for an entire day. The satellite remains in orbit for 10,000 years and its orbit remains intact. During the 10,000 years the amount of solar power measured by the satellite on June 20th steadily increases. Over these 10,000 years, the Sun's output has not varied. What's causing the increase?
