Magnet Specifications

Magnet Type      A permanent magnet always exhibits magnetic properties, whether inside a magnetic field, or not.  Permanent magnet materials are designated by Magnetic Materials Producers Association (MMPA) Class.  Each addresses the relevant properties, characteristics and specifications of each material, and the established sub-grades.  Historically recognized sub-grade descriptions (such as Alnico 1, 2, etc., or Ceramic 5, 8, etc.) are often referenced.  The Brief Designation classifies each sub grade by the normal energy product and the typical intrinsic coercive force.  For example, a material having a normal energy product of 5.0 mega gauss-oersteds (MGO) and an intrinsic coercive force of 2000 oersteds (2.0 key) would be assigned a Brief Designation of 5.01/2.0.  Many times an IEC Grade Code will also be presented for cross-reference.
   Your choices are...

   Individual Magnets

The term individual magnet denotes a magnet purchased in a size and shape that is ready for direct incorporation into a magnetic circuit.

   Bulk Magnet Materials

Bulk magnet material designates bar, rod, slab, strip, sheet, powder, etc., from which the purchaser cuts, stamps, or forms individual magnets.

   Magnetic Assembly

A magnetic assembly consists of one or more magnets and other components, such as steel, that can affect the properties of the magnet.

   Magnetic Sweeper

Magnetic sweepers can be made from a variety of permanent magnet materials.  They are used for picking up small ferrous parts, such as staples, bolts, screws, and iron or steel particles from floors, driveways, walkways, or lawns and gardens.  Magnetic sweepers are available as hand held, tow behind, or forklift-mounted units.

   Magnetic Lift

Magnetic lifts are designed for material handling and provide a lightweight, cost-effective means of transporting ferrous material. Magnetic lifts hold workloads. Surface conditions, material thickness, surface finish, and weight of the workload are factors that will affect the overall performance of magnetic lifts.  Some magnetic lifts are hand tools, while others require mounting to a forklift or crane.

   Magnetic Sheet Handler

Magnetic sheet handlers give a positive grip on steel sheets and plates.  They are designed primarily for sliding and pulling, but not for lifting.

   Magnetic Retriever

Magnetic retrievers are made specifically to retrieve ferrous metal items from hard to reach places.  The handles may be telescoping, fixed, or flexible.

   Rare-Earth Magnet

Rare-Earth magnets are permanent magnets made of alloys of rare earth components. They have the strongest magnetic field of most magnets.

   Permanent / Electromagnet Combination

The permanent / electromagnet combination provides for safely holding the load, even if power is accidentally removed from the magnet.

   Permanent Magnet Materials
   Your choices are...

   NdFeB (Neodymium Iron Boron)

Neodymium iron boron, a rare earth magnet, is the most recent commercial addition to the family of modern magnet materials. Its general composition is Nd2Fe14B, often-abbreviated NdFeB.  At room temperatures, NdFeB magnets exhibit the highest properties of all magnet materials.

   SmCo (Samarium Cobalt)

Samarium cobalt is manufactured in two compositions: Sm1Co5 and Sm2Co17 - often referred to as the SmCo 1:5 or SmCo 2:17 types. 2:17 types, with higher Hci values, offer greater inherent stability than the 1:5 types.

   Ceramic (Ferrite)

Ceramic, also known as ferrite, magnets (general composition BaFe2O3 or SrFe2O3) have been commercialized since the 1950s and continue to be extensively used today due to their low cost.  A special form of ceramic magnet is "flexible" material, made by bonding ceramic powder in a flexible binder.

    AlNiCo (Aluminum-Nickel-Cobalt)

AlNiCo magnets (general composition Al-Ni-Co) were commercialized in the 1930s and are still extensively used today.

   Iron-Chromium-Cobalt

Iron-chromium-cobalt magnets offer the considerable advantage of being receptive to plastic deformation processing such as rolling and drawing.  They can be used for compact, complex shapes that are difficult or impossible to achieve with other types of materials.

Strength

   Holding Force

The force the magnet is capable of holding under ideal conditions.  Conditions such as the size and shape of the parts, the surface conditions, motion, vibration, friction, holding angles, and machining forces will affect the holding force of the magnet and should be factored into the magnetic circuit design

   Maximum Energy Product, BHmax

Also known as the magnet strength or grade.  The point on the demagnetization curve where the product of B and H is a maximum and the volume of magnet material required to project a given energy into its surroundings is a minimum. It is measured in mega gauss-oersteds, MGOe.

   Residual Induction, Br

Search Logic:      User may specify either, both, or neither of the "At Least" and "No More Than" values. Products returned as matches will meet all specified criteria.
   Coercive Force, Hc

Search Logic:      User may specify either, both, or neither of the "At Least" and "No More Than" values. Products returned as matches will meet all specified criteria.
   Intrinsic Coercive Force, Hci

The intrinsic ability of a material to resist demagnetization. Its value is measured in oersteds and corresponds to zero intrinsic induction in the material after saturation. Permanent magnets with high intrinsic coercive force are referred as "hard" permanent magnets, which usually is associated with high temperature stability.

Search Logic:      User may specify either, both, or neither of the "At Least" and "No More Than" values. Products returned as matches will meet all specified criteria.
