Ceramic-to-metal       Ceramic-to-metal seals, also referred to as glass-ceramic-to-metal seals, are formed by heating the parts to be joined in order to melt the glass and allow it to flow into the metal parts. Glass ceramics are ceramics that can be fused and then molded, formed, ground or machined using conventional glass fabrication techniques. After part fabrication, the glass ceramic's structure is transformed from an amorphous glassy state to crystalline ceramic state.
Glass-to-metal (Matched Seal)       Glass-to-metal seals are created by bonding glass to metal. Glass can be bonded to metal mechanically, or by chemical interaction, which forms a stronger bond.  Glass-to-metal seals can be classified into two types; matched seals and compression seals. Glass-to-metal matched seals are manufactured using a metal alloy that has thermal expansion properties that match that of the glass over the operating temperature range.
Glass-to-metal (Compression Seal)       Glass-to-metal seals are created by bonding glass to metal. Glass can be bonded to metal mechanically, or by chemical interaction, which forms a stronger bond.  Glass-to-metal seals can be classified into two types; matched seals and compression seals. Glass-to metal compression seals are designed such that the thermal expansion of the metal alloy places a compressive stress on the glass through the operating temperature range.

Active Metal Brazing       The active metal brazing process allows metal to be joined to ceramic without metallization.  Materials that can be used for active metal brazing include ceramic, sapphire, zirconia, and metals such as stainless steel, molybdenum, tungsten, titanium and others.
Epoxies       One method to create a hermetic seal is to use an epoxy that cures to form a hermetic seal.  The epoxy cures slowly at room temperature, but cures quickly when the temperature is elevated.  The advantages of epoxy seals is that the flexibility and conductivity can be customized and they can be reworked.  However, they are not suitable for high humidity or salt spray applications.
Laser Welding       Laser welding is the newest and most effective method of forming a hermetic seal.  Laser welding can be applied with high precision without introducing any thermal damage.
Mechanical Seals       Mechanical seals may also be used to create a hermetic seal.  Mechanical seals have larger space requirements for mounting the sealing components and machining sealing grooves. Hermetic mechanical seals should not be used in high humidity or salt spray applications.
Solder       Solder may also be used to create a hermetic seal.  Creating a hermetic solder seal requires a great deal of skill to prevent over-heating and damaging surrounding components.  Solder hermetic seals use a solder with a low melting temperature.
