     Plain bearings are used to constrain, guide, or reduce friction in rotary or linear applications.  They work by means of sliding action as opposed to the rolling action used by ball, roller and needle bearings.  As in all bearings, proper lubrication is required to reduce wear and friction.  Some plain bearings are impregnated with oil, or self-lubricating, and do not require any external lubrication.

     Ball bearings are used to provide smooth, low friction motion in rotary applications.  Construction consists of an inner and outer ring, balls, and usually a cage or ball separator. 
   Cylindrical Roller Bearing       Cylindrical roller bearings have high radial load capacity and moderate thrust loads.  They contain rollers that are “cylindrical” in shape.  The rollers are not true cylinders; they are crowned or end relieved to reduce stress concentrations.  This geometry translates to low friction and allows for high-speed applications. 
   Needle Roller Bearing       Rolling element is a needle roller.  Needle roller bearings are designed for radial load applications where a low profile is desired. 
   Spherical Roller Bearing       Spherical roller bearings are self-aligning, double row, combination radial and thrust bearings.  The rolling element is a spherical, or crowned, roller.  The outer ring has a spherical race that allows for some misalignment of the shaft and housing.  They are unequalled in their capacity for high loads and tolerance to shock loads, but have limited speed capabilities. 
   Tapered Roller Bearing       Tapered roller bearings consist of an inner ring (cone), an outer ring (cup), a cage and rollers, which are profiled to distribute the load evenly across the roller.  They have high radial and axial (thrust) load capacity at low to intermediate speeds.  The thrust load capacity for single row tapered bearings is about 60% of the radial capacity.  Tapered roller pillow block bearings typically have two tapered bearings.  Double row tapered roller bearings have increased radial load capacity compared to single row bearings.  They can also handle thrust loads from both directions. 
   Hydrodynamic Bearing       Hydrodynamic bearings rely on a film of oil that develops clearance while the bearing is rotating.  Hydrodynamic bearings feature high stiffness and load capacity as well as long bearing life.

   Bearing Steel (52100)       Bearing is manufactured from a high carbon chrome steel, most commonly SAE 52100.  SAE 52100 refers to a chrome steel with 2% chromium and 1.00% carbon. 
   Bronze, Sintered       Sintered bronze is a porous material, which can be impregnated with oil, graphite or PTFE. Not suitable for heavily loaded applications but useful where lubrication is inconvenient. 
   Graphite-Metal Alloy       Bearing surface is an alloy manufactured from molten graphite and metal.  This material is self-lubricating. 
   Iron, Sintered       Sintered iron is powdered iron that has been pressed and sintered into a structural form.  ISO defines sintering as 'the thermal treatment of a powder or compact at a temperature below the melting point of the main constituent, for the purpose of increasing its strength by bonding together of the particles.'

     Any of numerous organic, synthetic, or processed materials that are mostly thermoplastic or thermosetting polymers of high molecular weight and that can be made into objects, films, or filaments.  Common plastic materials include Acetal, Nylon / Polyamide, PTFE, and ultra-high molecular weight (UHMW). Nylon Nylon, comprising several grades of polyamides, is a general purpose material in wide use; it is tough and resistant and has good pressure ratings. PTFE PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) is an insoluble compound that exhibits a high degree of chemical resistance and a low coefficient of friction. It is sometimes marketed in proprietary classes of materials such as Teflon®, a registered trademark of DuPont Dow Elastomers. Acetal Acetal polymers are semi-crystalline. They offer excellent inherent lubricity, fatigue resistance, and chemical resistance. Acetals suffer from outgassing problems at elevated temperatures, and are brittle at low temperatures. Glass filled, and added lubrication grades are available, flame retardant grades are not. Brand names include Celcon® (Hoechst Celanese), Delrin® (Dupont), Thermocomp® (LNP), Ultraform® (BASF), and Acetron® (DSM Polymer). UHMW Ultra-high molecular weight (UHMW) is an engineered polymer with unique a combination of wear and corrosion resistance, low-friction surface and impact strength. UHMW retains key physical properties to -30°C, resistant to chemical attack and moisture absorption. 
   Stainless Steel       Stainless steel is chemical and corrosion resistant and can have relatively high pressure ratings. 
   Teflon-Bronze       Bearing material is a Teflon® impregnated bronze that provides a low friction, self-lubricating bearing surface.  Teflon is a registered trademark of DuPont Dow Elastomers.
