   Cleaner / Penetrant Remover       Cleaners are designed for the pre-cleaning and post cleaning stages of penetrant inspection process. In the pre-cleaning stage, a cleaner, degreaser, or solvent is used to remove surface contamination such as cutting oils, greases, shop dust, swarf or soot. In the post cleaning stage, a cleaner or remover is used remove residual penetrant from the surface of a part so the liquid penetrant only remains in the surface flaws or cracks that are present. 
   Contrast Paint / Aerosol       Contrast paint or products provide greater contrast between the dye penetrant or powder and the background to improve visual detection. 
   Developer       Developers improve flaw visibility by pulling the penetrant retained in a cavity or crack to the surface. Developers are available in dry powder and aqueous forms depending on the specific penetrant testing method. In the dry powder method, powders are blown onto the part with a bulb, powder applicator, or swirl chamber after the application of penetrant to develop or enhance detection of the surface flaw. The fluorescent powder sticks to the penetrant remaining in a flaw or surface crack after cleaning. In the aqueous based developer methods, the powders are suspended in a liquid that is applied to the part by spraying or immersion. 
   Emulsifier       Liquid additive used to emulsify or enhance suspension of penetrants. 
   Penetrant Test Kit / Spot Tester       Small, portable penetrant testing kit for on-site evaluations in the field or plant or for testing large equipment that will not fit into the penetrant testing lab. The kit should contain required consumables, sprayers, and applicators. 
   Penetrant / Leak Tester       Penetrants are applied to a part by spray or immersion and the penetrant is pulled into surface flaws by capillary action. Next, a cleaner is used to remove residual penetrant from the surface of a part so the liquid penetrant only remains in the surface flaws or cracks that are present. Penetrant systems are available in visible or fluorescent forms with varying sensitivity levels depending on the material and flaw type being inspected. Red dye penetrants are visible under normal light. Fluorescent penetrants or penetrant systems may require UV or blacklight illumination. Developers or powders may be required to enhance visibility of the residual penetrant entrapped in the crack. Penetrants are also used for leak detection. Bubble leak tester solutions are applied to the external surface of a pressurized vessel or container. If a hole or crack is present, then bubbling or foaming occurs at the leak. The bubbling is detected visually or with the aid of ultrasonic instrumentation. 
   Sprayers       Manual, pneumatic, pump-based, or electrostatic sprayers are used to apply penetrant to components being tested. Sprayers are useful for large parts that cannot be immersed or for spot-checking of components in the field.

Magnetic Particle Inspection

   Coil Magnetizer       Electromagnet used to magnetize a product for magnetic particle testing. The part is passed through or laid on top of the magnet.  Magnetic poles created at flaws, cracks, or other discontinuities attract magnetic particles. 
   Conductor       Conductive bars or rods are placed inside a tube, pipe or hollow part; current is applied; and circular magnetization of the part is provided. The conductors may also be used to pass magnetizing current to contact plates or clamps. 
   Contact Pad / Plate / Clamp       Contact pads, blocks, plates, or clamps are used to conduct magnetizing current to parts. Contact pads usually consist of braided copper. Contact plates are often made of soft lead to provide low contact resistance. 
   Demagnetizers       Demagnetizers are used to remove any permanent magnetism from parts after testing. A magnetized motor shaft could cause problems if used in a magnetized condition. 
   Magnetic Particles       Magnetic particles are fine iron oxide particles with a high permeability (easily magnetized) and low retentivity (ability to stay magnetized).  Magnetic particles typically range in size between 0.125 to 60 microns. Three methods are typically applied: dry non-fluorescent, wet non-fluorescent, and wet fluorescent. Dry particles are chemically dyed gray, red, black, and yellow to provide contrast against the background of the test surface. A powder applicator is used such as a squeeze bulb or spray gun. Wet suspension particles are suspended in an oil based or water based liquid vehicle or carrier. In water-based suspensions, additional conditioners are required such as wetting agents and corrosion inhibitors. 
   Magnets / Magnetic Rubber       Permanent magnets of magnetic rubber used to enhance or alter magnetic field or magnetization. 
   Magnetizer Power Pack       Stationary or portable power packs are AC or DC power supplies for electromagnet magnetizers. 
   Yoke Magnetizer       A horseshoe shaped electromagnet used to magnetize parts for magnetic particle testing. An intense magnetic field is created between the yoke legs. Magnetic poles created at flaws, cracks, or other discontinuities attract magnetic particles.

   Penetrameter       X-ray opaque grids, stacked metal sheets of various known gage thickness often in a cassette used to measure the penetrating power or kilovoltage of x-rays or gamma rays in conjunction with x-ray imaging or radiography. Penetrameters are also used measure the penetrability of a sample. 
   Photographic Film       Film used for capturing x-ray or radiographic images. 
   Shielding / Interlock / Enclosure       Accessory components used during a test to avoid exposing personnel and equipment to radiation. The component contains the inspected part and the penetrating x-rays during a test. Shields or enclosures are constructed of metals or materials that absorb x-rays. Interlocks provide a safety lock that prevents a power on condition while an enclosure is open. 
   X-ray Opaque Marker / Tape       Lead markers, barium putty, or lead letters used to mark or label radiographic images.

   Alloy ID Chemical Spot Test Kits       Test kits are like "portable wet chemical labs."  Alloy ID or test kits use a chemical reaction or series of reactions to identify the type or general composition of an alloy sample. For instance, kits can determine if an aluminum alloy belongs in the 5000 or 6000 group series.  The chemical is swabbed or applied to a clean area of the surface and an indication of a reaction is observed and noted.  The test kits are also available for detection of surface contamination (free iron on stainless) or passivation.

   Descaler / Pickle       Removal of a thin layer of the surface may be required in some crack or surface flaw inspection applications. For instance, if the material has been wire brushed, machined or mechanically abraded, chemical etching may be required to reopen any flaws.  Also, if the material (such as titanium) has been stress-relieved without a protective atmosphere, then any alpha case formed should be removed prior to inspection. 
   Flaw Marker       Accessory used to mark detected flaws without inducing further damage for later correction or disposition. 
   Holder / Clamp       Bracket or clamp that holds a nondestructive probe or sample in position to allow accurate measurement of flaws, material condition, or thickness. 
   Illuminator       Light source used to enhance the detection of surface flaws when visible dyes or particles are used. 
   Immersion Grill / Basket       Manual or powered grill or baskets for immersing parts in tanks. 
   Light Meter       Meter used to measure the intensity of UV or other lighting required for penetrant or magnetic particles.
