May 16, 2013, Taipei, Taiwan – Innodisk is proud to be among the first to supply (DDR4) registered DIMM product samples to key server companies for their next-generation systems. With this announcement, Innodisk, an industry leader in DRAM modules for industrial applications and embedded systems, will continue to offer the most advanced technology to its customers. The result of almost eight years of development, DDR4 (Double Data Rate 4) technology improves on the previous generation, DDR3, in every way. These new memory products provide users with greater performance, but can still cut costs by saving power and space, and reducing waste heat. Performance: DDR4 offers a giant leap in peak performance over DDR3 technology, with a 3.2 Gbps data transfer rate. In fact, DDR4 could eventually even surpass this already high rate, according to standards organization JEDEC, in the same way that DDR3 surpassed its initial ceiling of 1.6 Gbps. DDR4 memory bus speeds start at 2133MHz, which already offers a huge jump in potential performance from the average bus speed of 1333MHz and 1666MHz offered by DDR3. Voltage: DDR4 devices run on significantly lower voltages than devices using DDR3 or DDR2 technology. JEDEC’s specifications suggest that DDR4 will operate with a power envelope of 1.2 volts, compared to the 1.5 volts demanded by the more power-hungry DDR3 generation. Lower voltages help extend component lifespans. Power consumption: DDR4 modules will reduce power consumption by approximately 40 percent compared to its predecessor DDR3 modules operating at 1.35V. Lower power consumption offers lower operating costs by cutting power bills, as well as a substantial reduction in heat output which helps extend lifetimes of system components, further reducing costs. Density: With DDR4, the maximum capacity per chip has now been doubled from 64GB to 128GB. The higher memory densities possible with DDR4 will save space, simplify module construction, and improve internal airflow. With this head start in DDR4 technology, Innodisk is ready meet the needs of tomorrow’s applications. As the IT landscape moves to adopt cloud computing practices, companies are relying more heavily on data centers with powerful server infrastructures. Innodisk offers registered DIMM in capacities of 4GB, 8GB and 16GB, so that Innodisk server customers can always be sure to have the perfect product to suit the exact capacity of each of their system designs. Innodisk looks forward to working together with server OEMs to create the next-generation platforms that are demanded by tomorrow’s challenges.

- Forte Design Systems™ (www.ForteDS.com), the #1 provider of software to enable design at a higher level of abstraction, today unwrapped its enhanced Cynthesizer™ SystemC-based high-level synthesis (HLS) product. The new version includes low power synthesis capabilities, core synthesis algorithms, and a new SystemC integrated development environment (IDE). “Power efficiency is necessary across the spectrum of devices, and is becoming increasingly more important as the explosion of mobile devices drives the need for big data and cloud devices,” says long-time Cynthesizer user Steven Frank, Panève chief executive officer (CEO). “Panève leverages Cynthesizer’s unique capabilities to develop radically new big-data architectures that are inherently more efficient in both power and performance. To be able to further optimize power efficiency of a synthesized SystemC design automatically and with minimal engineering effort further validates the SystemC design path and Cynthesizer.” Next-Generation Synthesis Core “Cynthesizer 5 defines the next generation of high-level synthesis technologies,” remarks Brett Cline, Forte’s vice president of marketing and sales. “We’ve leveraged more than a decade of production design experience to allow design teams to get to better results more quickly. Cynthesizer continues to lead the way for quality of results and now includes several advanced optimizations for low power design.” Cynthesizer 5 includes Forte’s new “C5″ synthesis core, introducing a new architecture that combines the scheduling and allocation phases of the tool, improving predictability and quality of results. New scheduling algorithms allow Cynthesizer to quickly test multiple design microarchitectures and schedules to find the best possible area, performance, and power based on the designers constraints. For existing users, the new C5 core improves area results 9% on average compared to previous Cynthesizer releases. Low Power Design Managing power usage is one of the biggest challenges for design engineers. With Cynthesizer 5, design teams can automate complex low power optimizations often difficult or impossible to realize with hand-written register transfer level (RTL) code. Designers can use Cynthesizer’s design exploration capabilities to trade off area, performance, and power for a given set of design constraints. Cynthesizer 5 introduces three major new user-controlled power optimizations to minimize datapath power, register power, clock tree power, and memory power. The patent-pending HLS-optimized clock gating technology analyzes and optimizes the design microarchitecture to find additional clock gating opportunities often impossible to find with RTL-based power optimizers. The patent-pending finite state machine (FSM) optimization minimizes power in the FSM as well as power consumed by false switching in the datapath. Finally, memory power optimizations allow designers to optimize memory accesses for performance or power. The combination of these new optimizations can yield power reductions of 60% or more depending on the design. The new power optimization features complement the existing Cynthesizer low power features. They include quarter- and half-speed memory architectures, low power memory modes, clock domain crossing circuitry for designs with multiple clock speeds, RTL coding techniques optimized for downstream RTL tools, and integrations with popular RTL power analysis and optimizations products. SystemC IDE and Analysis Environment The Cynthesizer Workbench graphical user interface included with Cynthesizer 5 includes a SystemC Integrated Development Environment (IDE), making SystemC development easy and intuitive for new users and advanced users alike. Beyond typical IDE features, the Cynthesizer Workbench also provides several SystemC design “kick-starters” to quickly create new models using pre-defined templates to reduce design and debug time. The internals of the Cynthesizer Workbench have also been redesigned to allow faster design, debug, and analysis of SystemC models and the resulting RTL designs. The analysis environment includes SystemC and RTL source linking, waveforms, and other tools to optimize design results. Forte will demonstrate its entire Cynthesizer and CellMath™ product portfolio at the 50th Design Automation Conference (DAC) in Booth #1547 Monday, June 3, through Wednesday, June 5, from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. daily at the Austin Convention Center in Austin, Texas.
Breker Verification Systems (www.brekersystems.com), The System-on-Chip (SoC) Verification Company, will celebrate its 10th anniversary now through the 50th Design Automation Conference (DAC), where it will exhibit in Booth #2015 June 3-5 at the Austin Convention Center in Austin, Texas. Crowning 10 years of achievement is TrekSoC™, Breker’s flagship software that automatically generates self-verifying and synchronized C test cases to run on an SoC’s multiple heterogeneous embedded processors for faster and more thorough verification. TrekSoC, first introduced in 2007, has been used to verify a variety of automotive, graphics and networking designs that have been taped out successfully and are in production use now. “Breker is changing an industry perception and trouncing the notorious stitch and ship practice,” says Adnan Hamid, Breker’s co-founder and chief executive officer (CEO). “Limited time and resources have created the misguided notion that individual IP blocks verified separately and plugged into an SoC will work together without essential full-chip verification running randomized user scenarios.” Instead of assuming an SoC with numerous embedded processors will work harmoniously, project teams are implementing the scenario modeling approach advocated by Breker and implemented by TrekSoC, saving countless tapeout disasters. Breker pioneered the use of graph-based scenarios for functional representation of an SoC as well as the use of these graphs to generate high-quality test cases to thoroughly verify the design. “NVIDIA sends its hearty congratulations to Breker for achieving this milestone and wishes it more good fortune,” notes Jonah Alben, senior vice president GPU Engineering at NVIDIA. “We have used the Trek family of products for the verification of many, many chip designs and can attest to its importance as a solid and critical component of our design flow. As a result, Breker is a valued EDA partner.” A 10-Year Journey Since 2003, Breker has worked diligently to fulfill its mission to be the first electronic design automation (EDA) company to solve the functional verification challenges of complex SoC designs containing embedded processors. To fully verify an SoC design, TrekSoC generates C test cases containing multiple streams of realistic user scenarios and schedules the steps so that they cross threads and processors. Originally founded in Austin, Breker relocated its corporate headquarters to San Jose, Calif., in 2012, and secured $5 million in Series A funding. Previously, Breker bootstrapped itself with a small, initial round of angel investment that enabled TrekSoC to gain market traction. The 2012 infusion of capital has been used to expand operations in all areas of marketing, sales, support and research and development, tripling the size of the company. Breker opened a sales channel for India and Singapore in 2012. For more information, visit www.brekersystems.com. About Breker Verification Systems Electronic Design Automation (EDA) software company Breker Verification Systems provides innovative solutions to solve the challenge of complex system-on-chip (SoC) functional verification and eliminate the pervasive “Stitch and Ship” SoC design approach. Its TrekSoC™ software and unique SoC scenario-modeling™ approach are used in production at leading semiconductor companies in the U.S., Europe and India.
TEWS TECHNOLOGIES, a leading provider of embedded I/O products, today announced the introduction of the TPMC685, a standard single-width 32 bit PMC module offering up to 128 bit of TTL I/O arranged in 16 x 8 bit ports. Designed for high-speed data acquisition and generation, the TPMC685 is ideal for applications in process control, simulation, test, transportation, and COTS. The TPMC685 is offered standard with extended temperature operation, rear I/O, and a 5 year manufacturer’s warranty. Software drivers for most major real-time operating systems are available. The direction of the I/O lines on the TPMC685 is software programmable by port. Each port is built up using a TTL bus transceiver. Each line is protected against ESD and overvoltage. Software selectable pullup/pulldown resistors are available on all I/O lines. It is possible to read or write synchronously all 128 lines. Each channel configured as an input can generate an interrupt, and signal edge handling is programmable to interrupt on either the rising and/or falling edge of the input signal. Interrupts can be enabled and disabled for each bit. An interrupt status register is provided for simplified interrupt source detection of each bit. To eliminate spikes and glitches, thereby keeping interrupts to a minimum, each port has its own user configurable input filter. All outputs drive 5V TTL levels with up to 24mA. The first 64 bits of TTL I/O are accessible via the front panel HD68 SCSI-3 type connector and the second 64 bits of TTL I/O via rear panel P14. TPMC685-11 provides 8 additional ground contacts on the P14 connector. These grounds reduce the number of Back-I/O lines to 56, but improve the signal integrity. To deal with software faults, the TPMC685 provides a user configurable Watchdog timer. It can set all outputs in a user defined (save) state when the watchdog expires. Two Timers are included in the TPMC685 for easy implementation of equidistant input sampling or output setting.
OneSpin Solutions Reaches for the Cloud, Driving New Technology, Business Model for Easy Adoption

http://www.globalspec.com/Goto/GotoWebPage?gotoType=engnews&rss=1&gotoUrl=http%3A%2F%2Fm%2Eopensystemsmedia%2Ecom%2F%7Er%2Fopensystemsmedia%2Fecd%2F%7E3%2FwAhaTf19M8U%2F

OneSpin Solutions™ (www.onespin-solutions.com), provider of innovative formal assertion-based verification (ABV) and formal equivalence checking solutions, today unveiled a new business model based on Cloud Computing designed to give project teams flexibility previously unavailable for electronic design automation (EDA) tools, while eliminating barriers to adoption. Design security, an issue in previous EDA Cloud Computing attempts, has been solved by leveraging the operational nature inherent in OneSpin’s Formal Verification (FV) software. The end product is simple to use, easy to adopt in a flow and has significant verification performance implications. No upfront investment is required to use the tools, made available on a pay-per-use basis. “The EDA industry reached for the Cloud before, but this is the first solution that assures design security,” says Dr. Raik Brinkmann, OneSpin Solutions’ president and chief executive officer. “Users with no formal verification knowledge can simply plug-in the technology and receive an instant, significant verification impact. This business model has implications right across the EDA industry.” The Multiple Applications of the Cloud The OneSpin cloud system, hosted by Amazon Web Services (AWS) Marketplace, provides easily applied, fully automated solutions as well as advanced formal verification (FV) tooling. The functionality of OneSpin’s 360 DV-Inspect and 360 DV-Verify products, as well as additional prove engines for parallel processing, have been made available on AWS. Application in a simulation-only environment is an easy plug-and-play operation requiring no formal verification knowledge. A free local client is downloaded and interacts with the cloud server for transparent, secure operation. Powerful 360 DV-Inspect design checks for a broad range of issues are automatically generated and run securely in the cloud, with the result debugged locally. The system creates a new paradigm for intellectual property (IP) delivery. Powerful integration tests included in the IP can be run without a formal tool purchase. Similarly, Verification Service Providers can run assertion analysis without requiring their customers to purchase the tools. “OneSpin’s cloud-based business model offers a level of flexibility that will be a refreshing change for companies looking to introduce this powerful verification technology at their own pace, without learning curve and investment barriers,” notes Holger Soukup, head of R&D Hi-Tech Electronics at Tieto Embedded Systems. “Additionally, this approach will be attractive for us as a system development service provider to individually enrich our verification coverage on a per-customer/per-project-basis. This new cloud-based business option confirms OneSpin as one of the most innovative companies in EDA.” Experienced formal verification users also benefit. OneSpin’s 360-DV Verify product for assertion-based verification and coverage can be run on-demand, with a charge for just the resources required. Verification also can be run with parallel engines, allowing for an instantly accessible, dramatic performance improvement that leverages the scalable Amazon system. How it Works OneSpin created a simple use model in cooperation with AWS, giving users control of the Cloud servers. The user downloads and licenses a freely available client tool, OneSpin 360-CS, from the OneSpin website that operates on the local machine. This tool includes a FreeLint capability that checks the design on the local machine before extracting the data for the Cloud servers. Cloud servers extend the functionality of 360-CS to include capabilities of 360-DV Inspect or 360-DV Verify and perform formal analysis. In addition, the Cloud solution can be used to add prove engines that operate in parallel with OneSpin’s existing products. The OneSpin Cloud Computing model provides users with on-demand flexibility and budgeting, reducing up-front investment based on unpredictable needs, eliminating license redundancy and providing budget flexibility. The need for proprietary design code to leave the office has been eliminated, significantly reducing security concerns. OneSpin’s technology analyzes the design code locally and only transmits an encrypted mathematical abstraction of the verification problem with all descriptive details stripped. After processing, results are returned to the local machine whereupon descriptive details are reapplied. No data is retained in the cloud. The design IP cannot be recreated from the stripped mathematical abstraction. Pricing and Availability OneSpin’s cloud solution is in Beta now. The trial for approved project teams will start Monday, June 3, and run until Friday, August 30, 2013. During this trial period, the cloud servers will be freely available, less a minimal charge to Amazon for the cloud service, for a restricted set of project teams, with general availability in September. Pricing starts from $25 per hour for running OneSpin 360 Inspect in the Cloud. Payment is made through AWS Marketplace. OneSpin at DAC The OneSpin Product Family will be demonstrated during the 50th Design Automation Conference (DAC) in Booth #846 Monday, June 3, through Wednesday, June 5, from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. daily at the Austin Convention Center in Austin, Texas.
CAMBRIDGE, United Kingdom, 13th May 2013. UltraSoC announced today that it is working with PMC-Sierra to incorporate its innovative silicon IP technology into PMC’s next generation of storage controllers. This development program, which is expected to lead to PMC taking a licence, incorporates UltraSoC’s library of advanced, feature-rich debug IP at the leading edge of embedded systems for PMC. UltraSoC’s UltraDebug® product provides a system-level capability for multiple heterogeneous processor cores, including graphics cores and custom accelerators, and enables early detection of software and hardware bugs as well as other important optimisation capabilities for memory interfaces and system fabrics. The technology, which is anticipated to be rolled out in chips in the latter part of 2013, and the imminent silicon validation of UltraDebug® on an advanced process node, will represent a significant milestone in the company’s development, enabling new licensees a high level of confidence in the adoption of a universal debug solution. UltraSoC’s CEO, Karl Heeks said, “As future generations of complex SoCs deliver ever more sophisticated electronic products it will be necessary to integrate increasing amounts of heterogeneous multicore processors. In order to effectively debug these systems it will be hugely beneficial to have a flexible and scalable solution provided by an independent company, as an alternative to current in-house solutions or existing debug technologies that are linked to a single architecture.” VP of Product Development for PMC’s Enterprise Storage Division, Salman Ghufran said, “Analyzing complex hardware and software interactions in high-end SoCs requires insight into what is happening through the entire device. PMC partnered with UltraSoC because we recognized that their unique monitoring and debug infrastructure would give us the needed visibility to both enhance our device operation and accelerate our time to market for our customers.” UltraSoC, which is backed by Octopus, is pioneering advanced debugging technology for the embedded systems increasingly used in everyday products from cars to mobile phones. The company is developing a universal debug, UltraDebug®, that will support any silicon IP from any semiconductor vendor and which will facilitate the increasingly complex system-on-chips (SoCs) that are required to provide the functionality and performance of sophisticated electronic products. About UltraSoC Technologies UltraSoC Technologies is a VC-backed independent provider of SoC infrastructure to enable rapid development of embedded systems based on advanced SoC devices headquartered in Cambridge.
Emerson Network Power, a business of Emerson and a global leader in delivering scalable embedded computing technology and power supplies for original equipment manufacturers in a wide range of industries, today announced support for Cavium’s TurboDPI™ II software on its ATCA-9405 AdvancedTCA® packet processing blade. Network equipment providers can now take advantage of this enhanced solution integrated with Emerson’s Centellis™ series 40G ATCA® systems to accelerate the development and deployment of applications that use deep packet inspection (DPI). These applications include network intelligence, monitoring, management and optimization; lawful intercept and multimedia streaming; and ‘bump in the wire’ applications such as policy enforcement, security gateways, and firewalls. Cavium TurboDPI II is carrier-grade DPI software which can be used inline or out of band to detect hundreds of communications protocols. Using hardware acceleration features built into Cavium’s OCTEON processors, TurboDPI II is also designed as a modular system with nine optional DPI modules, which include support for application recognition, security and performance monitoring. The Emerson Network Power ATCA-9405 packet processing blade has been designed to maximize the deep packet inspection, security application processing and raw throughput of Cavium’s dual OCTEON® II CN6880 processors. In addition to two 40G ATCA data fabric connections that can operate active/active as well as active/standby, the ATCA-9405 provides for direct Ethernet cable terminations of up to 160Gbps via a rear transition module (RTM) giving a total internal switching throughput of above 344Gbps. To help manage this, the blade’s independent system management processor implements sophisticated Ethernet switch management as well as local management functions. Free of such system management overhead, the OCTEON II processors can be dedicated solely to deep packet inspection. “The growth in traffic and demand for more security and management brings a new urgency to the deployment of DPI applications in 3G/4G, LTE and other next generation IP-based networks,” said Rob Pettigrew, director of marketing for Emerson Network Power’s Embedded Computing business. “This requires high performance computing platforms from a vendor who understands system integration. Emerson Network Power’s solutions are scalable from a blade-level building block, through small 3U entry level 2-slot platforms, right up to a 14-slot ATCA system. And our Centellis systems offer front-to-rear cooling, AC or DC power options and are equally at home in a network data center or telecom central office.” “Emerson Network Power has collaborated with Cavium for many years and the combination of our TurboDPI II software and its ATCA-9405 blade and Centellis systems will enable network equipment vendors to get to market faster, more cost-effectively and with lower risk,” said John Bromhead, director, solutions and services, Cavium, Inc. “TurboDPI II more than doubles the number of rich DPI functions that customers can mix and match for their particular applications.” Emerson Network Power’s recently published white paper, DPI Use Cases, Requirements and Architectures, analyzes use cases, defines a set of common requirements for DPI applications, and outlines architectures and building blocks that can simplify the creation of scalable, reliable DPI appliances.
Amsterdam – 14 May 2013 – ACE Associated Compiler Experts bv, world leader in tools and services for professional compiler development, announces the availability of the 2013 Spring Edition of its CoSy compiler development system. Integral support for complex architecture features allows compiler developers now to build, optimize and tune compilers for compute-intensive application domains and extreme architectures. Standard architectures and their software tools are not adequate to reach the required performance and power levels for application specific domains like audio, video and for new domains like next generation communication standards and embedded vision. Instead, dedicated architectures or extensions to existing architectures are developed together with target specific applications code, using a standard compiler that leaves the tuning up to the application developer. In this 2013 Spring edition, extended and new features like the Target Interface Mechanism and Code Generator Feedback provide for an integral system to create compilers that reach the best possible tradeoffs in performance and application portability for existing and emerging application specific processors. Using the new Target Interface Mechanism in CoSy, compiler developers can now steer the compiler optimizations to take full advantage of architecture specific features, while abstracting these from existing and validated compiler algorithms. One of CoSy’s unique compiler features, its modular design and flexibility, has allowed the support for feedback mechanisms in a compiler to steer the compilation for optimal results. The Code Generator Feedback feature in this 2013 Spring Edition provides information from the architecture specific Code Generator to do better decision making in high level optimizations and transformations, resulting in better optimization strategies. CoSy’s flexible and adaptive type description enables the support for unconventional data types, which are typical for application specific architectures, with parameterizable data size, alignment, etc. in a consistent way and with C level programming support for application developers. Further tuning of compilers can be reached using 100+ compiler engine options, the 20+ new compiler engines and 100+ improvements from customer and partner feedback. All new components and improvements are robust and in product shape as a result of the thorough testing and validation infrastructure used. The 2013 Spring Edition comes with a revised, extended and improved set of documentation for the professional compiler developer. Together with the training materials and the ACE compiler experts’ first line support program, compiler developers can go to the finest level of detail in their compiler endeavor. Overall performance for 100+ industry-standard benchmarks show a 15% out of the box improvement for commodity architectures since the last major CoSy release. Billions of devices have already been shipped containing CoSy supported application specific processors, which typically have factors better performance/power profiles than regular processors. The CoSy Spring 2013 Edition is readily available. About ACE ACE Associated Compiler Experts bv (a wholly owned subsidiary of ACE Associated Computer Experts bv, Amsterdam, the Netherlands) is world leader in tools and services for professional compiler development. ACE’s CoSy® compiler development system and its derivative CoSy Express™, give compiler developers the ability to achieve a leading edge position in the construction of better and faster optimizing compilers for a broad range of architectures and programming languages. SuperTest™ is the most comprehensive test and validation suite for compilers. Based upon 35+ years of ACE experience in compiler construction and validation, SuperTest provides a unique level of compiler test coverage and will find difficult problem cases in a compiler. SuperTest starts where other suites end. More information on ACE and its products and services is available at www.ace.nl.

As digital signage technology constantly improves, it becomes more user friendly, filled with many options that users can choose to use in their application. Many users are trying to find better ways of reaching their target audience. Digital signage is a great way of reaching target audiences through the display of dynamic content. Digital signage can be used in practically every application when trying to send a powerful or captivating message to an audience. Using digital signage media players can help to deliver content to a large group at one time with very minimal maintenance. Implementing a digital signage media player to any application help to create a more creative vibe, since a more effective image or video animation can help to deliver that power punch to “wow” visitors that come to see the attraction. Media players and digital signage can help turn a boring static billboard or image into something that is much more fun and interactive for visitors that come. In many applications, the display is meant to draw in visitors and capture their attention. The more creative the content, the more engaged visitors will become. Engaged visitors are most likely to help spread the attention of the display and this usually causes an excitement in the air and this helps to promote the exhibit or content that is displayed. Caltron’s newest player, the MP-1080N, high definition network digital signage media player with zoning and online content management software will help users create a display that requires minimal attention and can be easily updated remotely. While the digital signage media player does not create content, it does help to manage and arrange how the content will be displayed, with the free iCAT3 software provided. Content creators or self created content can be uploaded into the online management’s storage. The MP-1080N is capable of outputting full 1920 x 1080 HD content and is meant for screens that are capable of supporting 1080i or 1080P quality content. Designing and managing content with the simple iCAT3 software has never been easier. The iCAT3 software provides all of the necessary tools to properly create playlists and schedules as well as manage content all online. Each account will have a unique login and password for user security. The iCAT3 software is a simple, drag-n-drop, type of application that help user’s create single day playlists to multi day playlists. With a simple resizable zoning feature to create multi-zone content, a screen display with one single image/video can be displayed or there can be multiple zones, if necessary. This software also allows for music to be played in the background, if images are being displayed. As soon as the schedules and playlists are completed, the MP-1080N is ready to receive the playlists. iCAT3’s software also allows for a live RSS feed or a simple scrolling text to include more vital information. A date/time and weather feature can also be added for more information. A unique feature that the MP-1080N, digital signage player and iCAT3 has is that while it plays the current files and playlists, it is constantly downloading potential future playlists and schedules in the background to minimize loading times for future content to be displayed. This software is always receiving live feed back from each digital signage player so that player status is easily monitored. Content log data is always updated into iCAT3 to provide a detailed description of each player’s daily status. As long as each payer has an internet connection, then each player can be update from any location provided that location has internet connection for the user to connect to iCAT3 and update each player or group of players. The MP-1080N and iCAT3 was created to give each user an easy to use experience. Within a few minutes, the user can create playlists and schedules to be transferred to each digital signage media player. Content is transferred over IP to the internal 4GB internal memory or up to 32GB of external memory. User created playlists contain multiple digital signage file formats such as image, video or music files, along with scrolling text files and RSS file feeds.
The UK Device Developers’ Conference, taking place in Cambridge this week (16th May) will offer engineers and computer scientists the chance to discuss the very latest developments in both software and hardware for safety critical systems. The Conference is an event for anyone working in the development of intelligent systems and devices and is taking place in Cambridge (May 16th) and Manchester (May 22nd). “Software that controls systems such as nuclear power stations, or an airliner, or maybe even an every day motor vehicle, has to be reliable and predictable,” said Richard Blackburn, Event Organiser. “Often this software is referred to as ‘real-time’, as it has to behave in a determinist and predictable manner. At this event there will be some of the world’s leading developers of Realtime Operating Systems (RTOS) and a 1/2-day workshop to discuss the development of software for mission critical systems.” US RTOS company Wind River and Canadian RTOS company QNX will be exhibiting and available to discuss their latest developments, along with several other companies that work in this field, such as eCosCentric, SDC Systems and Reflex Technologies. Complimentary to this technology will be a range of debug tool companies that also play an important role in the development of software for high availability systems. German debug company Lauterbach will be available to discuss their latest technologies and will be presenting a half-day workshop on “Advanced Debugging Techniques”. “It is easy to see that having to recall a million cars, or maybe having a power station stop working is a very big deal,” said Richard. “Such a situation will incur a massive cost and a lot of long term damage to the brand. In this respect, having a highly robust operating system and a powerful set of debug tools is often the first step in the development of software for commercial electronics. At this event, engineers will have the opportunity to understand what is new and what is now possible.” The conference will include a vendor exhibition, several ½-day technical workshops and a schedule of informative technical presentations. It will be free to attend for engineers, computer scientists, project managers and students in this field, although there will be a small charge for workshops.
http://www.globalspec.com/Goto/GotoWebPage?gotoType=engnews&rss=1&gotoUrl=http%3A%2F%2Fm%2Eopensystemsmedia%2Ecom%2F%7Er%2Fopensystemsmedia%2Fecd%2F%7E3%2Fv%2DXPAY3Q470%2F

RICHMOND, North Yorks, England – 13 May 2013. Peratech, the innovators in touch technology, has developed an ultra-sensitive sensor using its award winning QTC™ technology. Quantum Tunnelling Composite material changes its resistance when pressure is applied, enabling it to be used to make pressure sensors that can respond to light touches even through steel or glass. “We have developed a sensor design that is so sensitive that it can be mounted behind a 0.1mm stainless steel or 0.5mm glass sheet and still detect the pressure of a finger on the top of the sheet,” said David Lussey, CTO of Peratech. “The QTC Ultra Sensor™ only takes a deflection of a micron or so for QTC to sense the touch through the sheet.” Fitting conventional switches to products always introduces a point of possible failure either within the switch or the fitting of the switch. QTC Ultra Sensor solve this as it can either be fitted as a small piece of QTC sheeting or screen printed on the back of the steel plate as required by the product designer. The design works equally well with other materials such as plastics, glass or wood provided that there is enough flex to activate the QTC switch. It can even be used behind translucent materials to create secret till lit buttons. QTC solutions are thinner, smaller, more discrete, less expensive and ultra-reliable as there is no air gap and no moving parts making them ideal for domestic, commercial and industrial equipment. Peratech is not selling the QTC Ultra Sensor as it uses the highly successful, Intellectual Property business model whereby it licenses the use of its QTC technology solutions to customers. “QTC Ultra Sensors have already attracted interest from white goods and automotive manufacturers,” explained David Lussey. “By taking a license they can deploy QTC Ultra Sensors throughout their product range to give sleek, discrete and ultra-reliable touch controls.” QTC material has nano-sized particles of conductive material evenly distributed in a non-conductive polymer. When a force is applied the particles move close enough for electrons to flow between the particles using an effect called Quantum Tunnelling. QTC technology has been used to make the world’s thinnest switch at only a few microns thick and can be made into any shape required or printed with whatever level of responsiveness to pressure that is needed. Video demo at www.peratech.com/assets/publicfiles/PERATECH_QT[...] The company Founded in 1996, Peratech is a privately held company with 25 employees based in Richmond, North Yorkshire. It commercialised its QTC technology at the beginning of 2006 and is currently working with a number of key technology clients who are implementing QTC sensing technology within their own products. Its business is essentially the IP licensing model that has been proven to be rapidly scalable and highly profitable for the likes of ARM and many others. The company is profitable, with 100% of sales being to overseas’ customers making it an excellent example of British innovation bringing in global revenue. Peratech is a rare example of a university spin-in with a close working relationship with the University of Durham who are researching into the properties of Quantum Tunnelling Composites. QTC technology is protected by numerous worldwide patents and has a wide range of applications. From robotics to automotive and from touch screens to consumer electrical products, the product has sales worth millions of pounds to companies around the world. Peratech’s multi-award winning QTC technology received the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in Innovation in November 2012.
