Industrial Cyber Security: Are ICS Threats Hype or Reality?

Increasingly, external intruders with malicious intent are gaining access to the control level of industrial networks within critical infrastructure. Too often, these breaches occur quietly with no obvious indicators. In this presentation, cybersecurity and forensic experts share real world cases to illustrate what can be done to protect industrial control systems, endpoints, and networks.

Overview

Increasingly, industrial companies and those operating critical infrastructure are finding themselves vulnerable to external intruders with malicious intent. In fact, recent research shows more than half of industrial cyber security (ICS) professionals believe they have been breached. Research also indicates most industrial operations teams are not cybersecurity experts and may be unsure or unable to tell if and when they have been compromised.

In this presentation, ICS experts David Meltzer, Chief Research Officer for Belden/Tripwire and Ryan Brichant, Vice President and Chief Technology Officer at FireEye, along with Sean McBride, iSight/FireEye's Lead Analyst for Critical Infrastructure will discuss specific real-world ICS compromises. They will explain what threat indicators to watch for and offer practical techniques for protecting the uptime, reliability, and safety of PLC, RTU, IED, and DCS equipment.

Key Takeaways

  • Understand the fundamentals of industrial cyber security
  • Review real-world compromises of ICS and discover threat indicators within your own environment
  • Gain practical advice for protecting industrial control systems, endpoints, and networks
  • Learn where to focus first, how to sustain progress, and how to get leadership support when circumstances warrant

Speakers

David Meltzer, Chief Research Officer, Belden

David Meltzer, Belden/Tripwire's chief research officer, has spent the last two decades protecting organizations from the world's most sophisticated cyber attackers. A security entrepreneur and developer, he founded two of the industry's first security vulnerability research groups, Cambia Security and Soncity. Meltzer speaks at industry events on threat intelligence and Industrial Internet of Things topics, and received the Shaping Info Security award in 2006. He holds a B.S. in Computer Science from Carnegie Mellon University.

Ryan Brichant, Vice President and CTO, FireEye
