Overview

This presentation will start with a brief overview of waterjet cutting technology and its use in manufacturing applications. This will be followed by a more detailed discussion of the two predominant types of ultra-high pressure pumps used in waterjet cutting-the hydraulic intensifier and the direct-drive triplex pump. The speaker will explain how these pumps operate and compare their relative strengths and limitations. He will also discuss the impact of pressure on cutting speed and operating cost. The presentation will conclude with guidelines for pump and operating pressure selection based on the particular cutting application of interest.

Laird Parry has enjoyed a 38-year career in mechanical engineering design and in technical sales, specializing in helping to develop new technologies and then successfully introducing them into the marketplace. He has been involved in high pressure waterjet technology, both in engineering and sales capacities, since 1984. He has worked for OMAX Corporation in various sales and applications roles since 1995. Mr. Parry received his B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California at Davis in 1969 and his M.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University in 1973.
