Many dry materials are extremely fragile, being either crystalline or aggregated materials such as freeze-dried milk or coffee. If they are relatively free-flowing, they can frequently be best measured using a free-fall feeder which simply lets the sample flow through the laser beam of the sizer with no additional dispersive action being applied.
