Drilling units and tapping units are machine tool components for automated drilling and tapping applications. They usually consist of a drilling head, chuck or collet, motor, and infeed cylinder or other mechanism. Drilling units and tapping units that are designed for machine tapping can operate with CNC drilling machines. Drilling equipment can include multiple spindle heads to increase drilling efficiency. Drilling multiple-hole patterns with a drilling tool mounted on a single spindle can...

Q:
Do you know of any disastrous mistakes that occurred due to the incorrect usage of Drilling Units and Tapping Units?
3 answers
Answers:
Metal stamping facility had no clue what to do when they had to add required drilling and reaming to a stamping. They made a command decision based strictly on price and first off had the wrong feed units. Did not have enough control for the specs required plus did not have enough retract stroke to remove the perishable tooling! They have to remove bushing plates and some fixture features to change tooling. Of course, this is very time consuming and opens lots of opportunities for misalignment.
~Jim G, Engineering Consultant, Troy, MI
Lack of torque to handle larger taps
~Mike B, Technical Support, Rock Island, IL

Q:
Is there any advice you want to share with users to help them avoid common errors in selection or usage of Drilling Units and Tapping Units?
5 answers
Answers:
Can you trust the project and/or product requirements long enough to pay ROM? Inexpensive feed units have a place in the market, but are not capable of 24 hour operation. Can you reuse a more costly, durable unit for retooling another project? Most feed units are used for a dedicated application.
~Jim G, Engineering Consultant, Troy, MI
